For indeed after he began the eighteenth year, he set up the image, just as has been said in the book before this, and its dimensions were also made known. After the year with twelve months was fulfilled, his kingdom was taken away from him so that the dream which was seen by him was fulfilled and he who had captured others, himself became a fugitive, and he who punished the Hebrews in a strange land, even he was deservedly punished in a desolate land.

All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar, but not for twelve months, a delay the bench reads as God's own patience giving the counsel of verse 27 its full season to be taken up or refused. The king is found walking in his own palace naming his own achievement, is not this great Babylon, that I have built, the pride the whole vision existed to answer spoken aloud in the very words the sentence was meant to prevent. Barnes notes the irony of the timing, judgment falling in the same breath as the boast that provoked it.

All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar - That is, the threatened judgment came upon him in the form in which it was predicted. He did not repent and reform his life as he was exhorted to, and, having given him sufficient time to show whether he was disposed to follow the counsel of Daniel, God suddenly brought the heavy judgment upon him. Why he did not follow the counsel of Daniel is not stated, and cannot be known.
