The verse counts the dead together, king, sons, armor-bearer and men. Gill and Henry point to 1 Chronicles 10:13 to 14, which gives the verdict: Saul died for his unfaithfulness and consulting a medium. The king Israel asked for goes down having failed at the last to seek the LORD.

All his men - This and similar expressions must not be taken too literally (compare 1Ch 10:6). We know that Abner, and Ish-bosheth, and manymore survived the day of Gilboa.
