And Ephraim their father mourned many days,.... For the loss of his son and grandchildren for the above fact was done while the Israelites were in Egypt, and Ephraim the patriarch yet alive; nor is there any need to suppose another Ephraim, different from him: and his brethren came to comfort him; some of the heads of the other tribes of Israel, particularly Manasseh, with some of his family.

Ezer and Elead were killed by the natives of Gath, because they went to steal their livestock. Ephraim mourned for many days and named the next son Beriah. Wesley notes Hebrew writers outside Scripture preserved the event, and Jamieson, Fausset and Brown take the natives of Gath as the raiders.

Gill holds that this happened in Egypt while Ephraim himself was alive, with no need to suppose a later man of the same name. The scene recalls Jacob mourning Joseph many days while his family tried to comfort him (Genesis 37:34 to 35). The family was then in Egypt.
