Why they only should be omitted we can assign no reason; only it is the disgrace of the tribe of Dan that idolatry began in that colony of the Danites which fixed in Laish, and called Dan, and there one of the golden calves was set up by Jeroboam.

Asher's record runs three generations after Beriah and closes with 26,000 men fit for battle. Verse 40 calls them choice and mighty men of valor, and chiefs among the leaders. Gill points out that Dan and Zebulun get no entry anywhere in this chapter.

Asher's 26,000 fighting men compare with 53,400 in the second wilderness census (Numbers 26:47). 1 Chronicles 12:36 later numbers 40,000 men of Asher who came to make David king. This count is the smaller figure.
