The sons of Issachar
on 1 Chronicles 7:1-5
Issachar's list runs four generations deep and closes at 87,000 mighty men of valor. Adam Clarke notes that Issachar, Benjamin and Asher are the only three tribes whose David-era musters survive. Gill traces the large numbers to polygamy, and verse 4 gives the cause: they had many wives and children.

The verse credits the clan's 36,000 troops to its many wives and children. In the second wilderness census the whole tribe of Issachar had numbered 64,300 (Numbers 26:25). The tribe kept growing.
