on 1 Chronicles 16:16-18
The covenant runs through three names: Abraham, Isaac by “the oath He swore”, and Jacob by confirmation. It promises “the land of Canaan as the portion of your inheritance” while Israel was still a handful of strangers in it. The wording follows Ps 105:9-11 almost word for word.

The covenant now reaches Jacob, the third patriarch. Jacob and Israel are one man under two names, and the decree made to him stands as an everlasting covenant. Adam Clarke counts God's care for Jacob among the proofs that the patriarchs were the anointed ones of verse 22.
