Romans 7:1-3

Know ye not, brethren, that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth: Paul writes to those who know the law, likely a congregation with a strong Jewish core, and reaches for a marriage illustration to prove a legal principle, that death ends a legal bond and frees the survivor from its claims. The woman bound to her husband while he lives becomes free the moment he dies, and only then may she marry another without the charge of adultery. The bench reads the illustration for its single point, the dominion of law lasts only as long as life lasts, and cautions against pressing every detail of the marriage figure into chapter 6's death with Christ, since the illustration serves the argument rather than the reverse.

Romans 7:4

Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ: the application arrives, and Paul shifts the dying party from the illustration, it is not the law that dies but the believer, put to death in Christ's body on the cross and so released from the law's dominion as fully as a widow is released from her husband. That ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God: the believer is remarried to the risen Christ, and the fruit language answers 6:21-22's fruit unto holiness, a new union producing a new harvest. The bench notes Paul's care, the law itself is not put to death or blamed, the believer's relation to it is what changes.

Romans 7:5-6

For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death: Paul names the tragic irony chapter 7 will spend its middle third explaining, the law meant for life became an occasion for sin's activity in the unregenerate condition, en te sarki, in the flesh as a past state now left behind. But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held, that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter: the contrast of spirit and letter reappears from 2:29, and the bench reads oldness of the letter as the law's demand without the Spirit's power, newness of spirit as the same law's righteousness now pursued from a renewed heart rather than external compulsion.

Romans 7:7-8

Is the law sin?: What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid: the diatribe engine fires again, the imagined objector drawing the wrong inference from verse 5, that if the law provoked sin the law itself must be sinful, and Paul's strongest negative rejects it outright, then continues: Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet, the tenth commandment chosen because covetousness is an inward desire no external act can convict, so the law's true office is exposed, to reveal sin rather than create it. But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence: sin is personified as an invader that seizes the very prohibition as its opportunity, forbidden fruit made more desirable by the forbidding.

Romans 7:9-11

For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died: the bench reads this autobiographically of Paul's own experience, most naturally the bar mitzvah threshold when the law's full demand came home to a Jewish boy's conscience, a childhood sense of moral standing collapsing under the commandment's true weight. And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death: the law promised life to the one who kept it, Leviticus 18:5, yet in Paul's actual experience it delivered death, because sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me, the same personified sin using the good commandment as its weapon, exactly as the serpent used God's own word at the fall. The bench notes the echo of Genesis 3 in the language of deception and death by a commandment meant for life.

Romans 7:12-13

the law is holy: Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good: Paul closes the first movement of his defense with the law's full acquittal, three adjectives stacked to leave no room for blaming the law itself. Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid: the third me genoito of the chapter refuses the charge a second way, and the true culprit is named again, but sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good, that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful. The bench reads the purpose clause as the passage's real target, the law's very goodness is what exposes sin's true horror, sin shown to be sin precisely by what it does with something holy.

Romans 7:14-16

For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin: verse 14 opens the chapter's most contested stretch, and the tense shift from past to present here has divided readers ancient and modern over whether Paul describes his unregenerate past or his ongoing Christian experience, Augustine himself holding the unregenerate reading early in his career and the regenerate reading later, both positions ancient and both still held. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I: the description is of a divided will, wanting one thing and doing another, and verse 16's if then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good treats the very presence of the inward struggle as proof the law is approved rather than despised, whichever side of the divide the speaker stands on.

Romans 7:17-18

Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me: Paul distinguishes the true self from an indwelling principle of sin without excusing the self, since the very next clause locates that sin's residence precisely. For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not: the parenthesis in my flesh is Paul's own gloss, confining the admission to the flesh rather than the whole person, and the bench notes that whichever side of the regenerate question a reader lands on, the verse describes a will genuinely set toward good that cannot on its own achieve what it wills, the precise gap Paul's gospel exists to close.

Romans 7:19-20

For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do: the couplet restates verse 15 in reverse order for emphasis, and Paul will not let the contradiction rest lightly, driving it home a second time before drawing his conclusion. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me: the repeated formula from verse 17 frames the whole middle section as a ring, sin identified as a resident power distinct from the willing self, and the bench notes this is confession, not excuse, since the speaker never denies responsibility for the deed even while naming its deeper source.

Romans 7:21-23

I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me: Paul names a discovered principle, nomos used loosely of an observed regularity rather than the Mosaic law, a law of moral experience as fixed as any statute. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: the verb sunhedomai, to delight together with, is strong, the inner man not merely assenting but rejoicing in God's law, a description the bench weighs heavily on the regenerate side of the debate since Paul elsewhere reserves such language for the believer's renewed nature. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members: a battlefield of two laws inside one person, the mind's law and the members' law, ending for the moment in captivity, antistrateuomenon, a military term for an opposing army in the field.

Romans 7:24-25

O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death: the cry is the chapter's emotional summit, talaiporos, a word for the utterly miserable, and the bench reads the body of this death against the ancient practice reported of some ancients who bound a corpse to a murderer as living punishment, a vivid figure for sin's deadweight on the soul whether or not Paul had that custom literally in view. I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord: the cry turns to thanksgiving before the answer is even stated, the deliverer named a breath after the misery, and the chapter's own resolution, so then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin, restates the divided condition one last time as Paul turns the corner into chapter 8's answer, no condemnation and life in the Spirit, where the wretched man's cry finds its rest.
