Revelation 19:1-3

Heaven answers Babylon's fall with the book's first Alleluia, the Hebrew hallelujah untranslated and given four times in this chapter alone, its only appearances anywhere in the New Testament. The praise is grounded in justice, not mere relief, true and righteous are his judgments, because he hath judged the great whore and avenged the blood of his servants, chapter 18's long lament from earth now answered from heaven in a single verdict. Her smoke rose up for ever and ever states the finality of the judgment already described, the same phrase used of the beast worshippers' own torment at 14:11, showing that both the system and its followers meet the same unending end.

Revelation 19:4-6

The elders and living creatures who have led worship since chapter 4 fall down a final time, their Amen and Alleluia sealing heaven's own verdict on Babylon. A voice from the throne calls all his servants, small and great, to the same praise, no rank exempted and none excluded, the same leveling this book has held since its first blessing at 1:3. The great multitude's Alleluia rises with the sound of many waters and mighty thunderings, and its ground is stated in five words, the Lord God omnipotent reigneth, the truth the whole book has been unveiling since its first verse now declared in heaven's own hearing.

Revelation 19:7-8

The bride thread that runs from Eden's first union through the Song of Songs and Paul's own picture of Christ and the church at Ephesians 5:25-32 arrives here at its wedding day, the marriage of the Lamb is come. His wife hath made herself ready, yet the readiness itself is granted, not earned, a grant the next clause defines precisely, the fine linen is the righteousness of saints, imputed righteousness worn as a garment rather than a wardrobe of the church's own making. The bride stands in deliberate contrast to Babylon the harlot, arrayed in purple and scarlet by her own hand at 17:4, just silenced in chapter 18, one woman judged, the other clothed.

Revelation 19:9

This is the fourth of the book's seven beatitudes, and its language of calling and supper answers the Lord's own parable of the wedding feast and the guests bidden to it at Matthew 22:1-14 and Luke 14:15-24, the invitation now finally kept. The command to write and the seal these are the true sayings of God mark the vision as certain rather than merely symbolic hope.

Revelation 19:10

I fell at his feet to worship him: John, overwhelmed, falls to worship the angel who has just spoken to him, and the angel refuses at once, see thou do it not, the same refusal repeated at the book's very close at 22:8-9, a standing witness against every creature-worship, angels included. I am thy fellowservant places the angel beside John rather than above him, and the reason given reaches past the moment, the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy, meaning that every true word of prophecy, in this book and in every age, bears witness to Christ and to him alone. This verse is the site's own answer to the continuationist question at its root: prophecy is not withdrawn, it simply never speaks of anything but Jesus.

Revelation 19:11-13

Heaven opened answers 4:1's own opening at the book's midpoint, and this time what comes through is not a vision shown but the Lord himself riding out, Faithful and True, after the beast's own counterfeit was, and is not, and yet is in chapter 17. His eyes of flame recall 1:14's opening vision of him among the lampstands, and many crowns, diadems rather than the beast's mere seven, answer the dragon's and the beast's crowned heads in chapters 12 and 13 with a king who outranks every rival crown worn in this book. The vesture dipped in blood is read two ways with holders, his own blood shed at the cross, or the blood of his enemies from the treading yet to come at verse 15, and either reading arrives at the same title given here, his name is called The Word of God, John's own gospel opening now seen riding to war.

Revelation 19:14

The armies of heaven ride white horses and wear the same fine linen just given the bride in verse 8, and the positions are named with holders on who they are, glorified saints, angelic hosts, or both together, without this exposition needing to settle which to keep the verse's own force. No weapon is named for this army; the battle that follows is fought by the Rider's word alone, and his followers ride to witness a victory rather than to win one by their own strength.

Revelation 19:15-16

The sword from his mouth is the same living word Hebrews 4:12 and this book's own opening vision at 1:16 already named, judgment executed by speech rather than by blade, a decisive answer to every reading that expects the second coming to need an army's weapons. The rod of iron cashes the promise made the overcomer at 2:26-27, and he treadeth the winepress draws directly on Isaiah's own lone warrior, his garments stained crimson, who trod the winepress alone and of the people there was none with him, at Isaiah 63:1-3. The title written on his vesture and thigh, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS, is the exact title the Lamb already bore over the ten kings at 17:14, spoken there in promise and worn here in fact.

Revelation 19:17-18

an angel standing in the sun: A second supper is announced here, this one a grim mirror of verse 9's marriage supper of the Lamb, the great supper of God to which birds of prey are summoned rather than blessed guests. The invitation echoes Ezekiel's own summons of birds and beasts to feast on Gog's fallen army at Ezekiel 39:17-20, and its list, kings, captains, mighty men, small and great, matches exactly the ranks that had allied with Babylon in chapter 18, now fallen with the beast they served.

Revelation 19:19

the beast, and the kings of the earth: The gathering already named at 16:16, Armageddon, comes to its point here, the beast and the kings of the earth arrayed against the Rider, the war the ten horns had begun against the Lamb back at 17:14 now joined in full. The verse states the battle's shape before it is fought: one side is named an army, the other simply him that sat on the horse and his army, the outcome already settled by who leads it.

Revelation 19:20

No battle is described, only capture, the sea beast and the land beast now named false prophet for the first time, the second beast of chapter 13 whose signs had deceived the mark's takers. These both were cast alive into the lake of fire, the first two occupants of a place that will still hold only them and the devil a thousand years later at 20:10, a picture of conscious, unending judgment this exposition receives at the text's own force.

Revelation 19:21

The armies gathered in verse 19 meet the same weapon named in verse 15, the sword proceeding from his mouth, the Rider's spoken word alone ending the war his enemies had begun. The birds summoned in verse 17 are filled with their flesh, closing the chapter's second supper and answering with blunt plainness every reading that would spiritualize the beast's end into a merely political defeat; chapter 20 opens next with the dragon himself still to be dealt with.
