Revelation 10:1-2

Another mighty angel comes down from heaven, and the description crowds in the same imagery John used for the risen Christ in chapter 1, a cloud, a rainbow, a face like the sun, feet like pillars of fire, close enough that some readers through church history have taken this for a christophany rather than a created angel; the main line answers that the term angel, and the being's own posture of swearing an oath in verse 6 to him that liveth for ever, sit more naturally with a glorious created messenger acting in his Lord's authority, and both readings are held by named voices. His stance, one foot on the sea and one on the earth, pictures a sovereignty over the whole created order that the little book he carries, open rather than sealed like the scroll of chapter 5, is about to speak into.

Revelation 10:3-4

The angel cries with a voice like a lion's roar, and seven thunders answer, seven complete and articulate voices, for John was about to write what they said until a voice from heaven stopped him, seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not. This is the one place in the whole book where John receives revelation he is expressly forbidden to record, and the exposition names the plain lesson without speculating at the content: some things God discloses to his servants and does not commission them to publish, and Daniel's own sealed words at Daniel 12:4 and 9 stand as the pattern for a revelation partly withheld even from its own prophet.

Revelation 10:5-7

The angel lifts his hand to heaven and swears by him that liveth for ever and ever, the Creator named by his works, heaven, earth, and sea, that there should be time no longer, chronos, and the phrase divides readers, the King James rendering time itself has ended, while most modern translations and a strong majority of commentators, following the Greek's own sense of chronos as delay or interval, read there should be delay no longer, no further postponement before the mystery of God is finished. The site follows the delay reading as the better fit with what follows, the seventh trumpet in 11:15 sounding almost at once, and the mystery itself, God's whole hidden purpose in history, is declared finished exactly as he announced it beforehand to his servants the prophets, Amos 3:7's principle stated as the pattern of the whole book.

Revelation 10:8-9

The heavenly voice that silenced the thunders now sends John to the angel with a specific instruction, take the little book. The angel's answer names the cost in advance, sweet as honey in the mouth but bitter in the belly, and the double taste is the book's own commentary on the prophetic office itself, the word of God is sweet to receive and often bitter to carry and proclaim, a pattern set already at Ezekiel 3:1-3, where the prophet ate a scroll of lamentation and mourning and woe that also tasted like honey in his mouth.

Revelation 10:10-11

sweet as honey: John eats the book and finds the taste exactly as promised, sweet in the mouth, bitter once swallowed, an experience rather than a symbol he merely describes. The commission that follows renews his prophetic office for the second half of the book, thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings, the fourfold formula echoing 5:9's redeemed multitude but here naming the audience of coming judgment rather than praise, and it signals that the chapters ahead, the two witnesses, the woman and the dragon, the beasts, and Babylon, still lie before the reader as unfinished business the angel's little book has just authorized John to deliver.
