Psalm 26

Psalms 26:1-3

David opens with a plea for God to examine him, naming the reins and the heart, the seat of emotion and conscience in Hebrew thought, as fit ground for the trial. Walked in mine integrity does not claim sinlessness; the older commentators read it as sincerity of purpose, a single-minded loyalty to God rather than a flawless record. The plea rests on lovingkindness kept before his eyes, so the confidence is not in his own strength but in a life lived with God's mercy constantly in view.

Psalms 26:4-5

David names the company he has refused: vain persons who speak emptiness, dissemblers who hide their true intent, and the congregation of evildoers who gather as a body. The language recalls the opening of the Psalter, where the blessed man is marked first by the company he refuses before he is marked by anything he does. Hated in verse 5 is aimed at an assembled body of wickedness rather than at any one sinner, the strong word reserved for organized evil rather than for individuals.

Psalms 26:6-8

The washing of hands recalls the priestly law that a man must wash before approaching the altar, given at the laver in Exodus 30, though David was no priest and uses the picture rather than performs the rite. Compassing the altar suggests the festival procession that circled it in worship, matched to the voice of thanksgiving and the telling of God's wondrous works in verse 7. Verse 8 turns from the ritual picture to plain affection: David does not merely attend the house of the Lord, he loves the place where God's honour dwells.

Psalms 26:9-10

The prayer asks not to share the fate of sinners and bloody men at the reckoning, the same gathering language later used of the final ingathering of the righteous and the wicked. Verse 10 names the specific sin in view: bribery, mischief kept in the hand that should hold justice, a charge the law had already forbidden in Exodus and Deuteronomy. David's fear is not merely for his life but for his place among the wrong company when God separates the two.

Psalms 26:11-12

The closing verses return to the opening claim, but now paired with a request for redemption rather than a demand for verdict, integrity and grace held together rather than integrity standing alone. An even place in verse 12 answers the psalm's whole argument in one image, stability given to the one who has refused the company of verses 4 and 5. The last line answers the fear of verse 9 directly: rather than being gathered with sinners, David will stand in the true congregation and bless the Lord there.
