Matthew 2:1-2

The wise men from the east are magoi, the Persian priestly-astronomer caste Daniel once governed in Babylon (Dan 2:48), and the bench has long read their arrival as fruit of the exile: a Gentile college that kept Balaam's Star oracle (Num 24:17) and Daniel's timetable until both pointed at Judea. The text itself gives no number, no names, no kingship; three is an inference from three gifts and the rest is later tradition. What Matthew states is the point: at the birth of Israel's King, the first worshippers are Gentiles asking directions from a Scripture they believed and Jerusalem did not open.

Matthew 2:3-4

Herod was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him, and the commentators let the irony stand: the city of the great King shakes at the news that her King is born. Herod's fear is political, an Idumean on a contested throne hearing of a born King of the Jews; Jerusalem's fear is of Herod, whose jealousy had already killed a wife and three sons. The gathered chief priests and scribes answer the Messiah question instantly and accurately, which sets up the chapter's quiet indictment, since knowing the address and walking the five miles are different things.

Matthew 2:5-6

In Bethlehem of Judea, the scribes answer, and they cite Micah 5:2 as settled messianic exegesis; this is the one fulfillment citation in the chapter spoken by Israel's own teachers rather than by the evangelist. Matthew's rendering differs from the Hebrew, which calls Bethlehem little among the thousands of Judah, where the citation says not the least among the princes; the bench resolves it as the scribes' own targumic paraphrase turning the point rather than mistaking it, since the town least in size is greatest in destiny. The Governor that shall rule carries the shepherd verb, poimaino, the first sounding of the shepherd thread that runs to the smitten shepherd of 26:31.

Matthew 2:7-8

Herod privily called the wise men, and the secrecy is the tell: a public inquiry would have sent the Sanhedrin to Bethlehem with him, so he splits the witnesses, dates the star in private, and dresses murder as devotion with that I may come and worship him also. The commentators read his diligent enquiry beside verse 16, where the same word returns as the measure of the massacre, two years old and under according to the time he had diligently enquired. The chapter runs on the contrast of the three responses to the born King: the magi worship, Herod plots, the scribes do nothing.

Matthew 2:9-10

The star which they saw in the east now goes before them and stands over where the young child was, and the language strains every natural reading: conjunctions and comets do not halt over houses. The bench divides honestly between a providentially timed celestial event for the road's first leg and a directly miraculous light, Shekinah-like, for the last; Chrysostom argued no ordinary star walks south from Jerusalem to Bethlehem. The text does not adjudicate the mechanism and the exposition does not either; what it states is the gladness, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy, the strongest joy formula in the Gospel.

Matthew 2:11-12

gold, and frankincense, and myrrh: Gold, and frankincense, and myrrh are treasury gifts fit for an eastern court homage, and the old teachers read them as an unwitting confession: gold for a king, frankincense for God, myrrh for a man appointed to die. That triple reading is reception history, not the text's own claim, and the exposition names it as the church's meditation from Irenaeus onward. Two plain facts anchor the scene: they came into the house, not the stable, months having passed since the birth; and the gifts bankrolled the flight to Egypt that verse 13 commands. The magi exit warned of God in a dream, the second of the chapter's four dreams, and go home another way.

Matthew 2:13-15

Flee into Egypt reverses the oldest road in Israel's memory, and verse 15 makes the reversal the point: that it might be fulfilled, Out of Egypt have I called my son. The citation is Hosea 11:1, and in Hosea the son is Israel in the exodus; Matthew is not misreading the prophet but stating his hermeneutic openly, that Jesus is the true Israel who retraces the nation's steps and gets them right, down into Egypt under threat of a child-killing king, and out again at God's call. The exposition states this as Matthew's own typology, the same pattern that carries him through the water at 3:13-17 and into forty wilderness days at 4:1-11 answering forty years, armed with three quotations from Deuteronomy's wilderness chapters.

Matthew 2:16-18

Herod slew all the children in Bethlehem from two years old and under, and the bench sets two honest notes side by side: the village's size puts the number likely between ten and thirty, not the thousands of later legend, and the deed is entirely in character for the man Josephus records murdering his own sons, so that Augustus reportedly quipped it was safer to be Herod's pig than his son. Matthew hears Jeremiah 31:15, Rachel weeping for her children, Ramah's lament when the exiles were marshalled past her tomb; the formula here is then was fulfilled, not that it might be, the bench noting Matthew's care never to make God the purposer of the crime. In Jeremiah the weeping verse opens into refrain thy voice from weeping, and the exposition leaves that door where Matthew left it, ajar.

Matthew 2:19-22

When Herod was dead the angel's charge echoes Exodus 4:19 nearly word for word, go, for they are dead which sought thy life, Moses' own recall from Midian now spoken over the greater deliverer. Joseph obeys, hears that Archelaus reigns in Judea, and fears rightly; Archelaus opened his rule by killing three thousand in the temple courts and Rome deposed him within a decade. Warned of God in the fourth dream, Joseph turns aside into Galilee, and the exposition notes how the chapter's geography is steered entirely by revelation, four dreams moving one family while the powers that hold the map lose the child they hunt.

Matthew 2:23

He shall be called a Nazarene is the hardest citation in the Gospel, for no Old Testament verse says it, and Matthew signals as much by writing spoken by the prophets, plural, a summary rather than a quotation. Three readings hold the field and the exposition names all three: the wordplay on netzer, the Branch of Isaiah 11:1, so that the village name preaches the Branch prophecies; the despised-place reading, Nazareth as a byword (John 1:46) fulfilling the prophets' despised-and-rejected Messiah in sum; and the older Nazarite echo, which the bench mostly declines since Jesus took no such vow. The first two are not rivals, since a netzer is a shoot from a felled stump, obscurity written into the word itself, and the chapter that opened with a king born in David's city closes with him growing up in a town the Scriptures never name.
