Mark 11:1-3

He sendeth forth two of his disciples with instructions so exact, a tied colt in a named village, that the moment answers Zechariah 9:9 before a single crowd gathers. The bench reads the detail as the Lord's own foreknowledge rather than prior arrangement with an unnamed owner, since he names the animal, its location, and even the objection before it is raised. The password he gives, the Lord hath need of him, is a claim of ownership over every creature and every possession, spoken by the King who owns the colt he has never ridden.

Mark 11:4-6

In a place where two ways met the colt stands exactly as told, and the disciples find every word fulfilled to the letter down to the bystanders' question. They said unto them even as Jesus had commanded, and the owners release the colt on the strength of a borrowed sentence from strangers. The bench holds this up as the pattern of ready obedience to an instruction that made no worldly sense until it was carried out.

Mark 11:7-8

They cast their garments on him for want of a saddle and he sat upon a colt whereon never man sat, an animal set apart by that very fact for a sacred use under rabbinic reckoning. The crowd spreads garments and cut branches in the road, an improvised royal carpet for a King who owns no horse and commands no army. Mark's plain, unadorned telling lets the scene's own contrast, poverty and kingship together, carry its weight.

Mark 11:9-10

They cried, saying, Hosanna, the Hebrew plea of Psalm 118:25, save now, turned by the crowd into a shout of welcome for the coming king. Blessed be the kingdom of our father David names exactly what the crowd expects, a restored Davidic throne, and the bench notes the ambiguity Mark leaves standing: the words are true of Christ's kingdom while the crowd means something narrower and more immediate. He comes on a colt of peace rather than a warhorse, a detail the same crowd will forget within the week.

Mark 11:11

He had looked round about upon all things and, the hour already late, withdrew to Bethany rather than acting that same day. Only Mark gives this quiet first visit, a deliberate inspection before the cleansing of the next morning, and the sequence sets up the sandwich the chapter now builds, the fig tree wrapped around the temple's own day of reckoning. The King surveys his house before he judges it.

Mark 11:12-14

He was hungry the next morning and finds a fig tree in leaf but bare of fruit, for the time of figs was not yet, a note the bench takes seriously rather than as an excuse for the tree. Early Palestinian fig trees commonly show small edible buds alongside the leaves well before the main crop, so leaves without any fruit at all signaled a tree that would bear nothing that season regardless. The curse, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever, is a prophetic sign act against a show of leaves with no substance behind it, aimed past the tree at the nation's worship.

Mark 11:15-17

He began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple and overthrew the tables, the second such cleansing of his ministry, distinct from the one John records at its start. The trade sat in the Court of the Gentiles, the one space in the temple set aside for the nations to pray, and the dove sellers profited on the sacrifice the law allowed the poor. His quotation joins two prophets, Isaiah's house of prayer for all nations and Jeremiah's den of thieves, naming exactly what had displaced exactly what the space was for.

Mark 11:18-19

The chief priests and scribes sought how they might destroy him, and Mark names their motive plainly, they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doctrine. The crowd's wonder and the leaders' murder plot sit in the same two verses, a contrast Mark makes no comment on because none is needed. When even was come he leaves the city again, the rhythm of Passion week, teaching by day and withdrawing by night, already set.

Mark 11:20-21

They saw the fig tree dried up from the roots, withered entirely and overnight, the visible half of the sandwich now closed around the temple scene it framed. Peter calling to remembrance names what he saw, thou cursedst, and his surprise at the speed of it draws out the teaching that follows. A tree of leaves without fruit and a temple of trade without prayer meet the same word and the same end.

Mark 11:22-23

Have faith in God: Have faith in God answers Peter's astonishment with a lesson the withered tree was meant to teach, that the power behind the curse is available to faith that does not doubt in his heart. The mountain removed and cast into the sea is proverbial for an obstacle that looks fixed and immovable, and standing on the Mount of Olives with the temple mount in view, the image was not abstract to the men who heard it. The bench reads the saying as a call to undoubting trust in God's power and God's word, not a formula detached from either.

Mark 11:24

What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them extends the fig tree's lesson to prayer generally. The bench is careful here, since the same verse has been stretched by some into an unconditional claim on any desire named in prayer, a reading the wider chapter's own conditions, undoubting faith and, next, a forgiving heart, will not support standing alone. The promise is real and is addressed to prayer offered in living trust in God, not to desire as such.

Mark 11:25-26

When ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any ties answered prayer to a forgiving heart, the same condition the Lord's Prayer names at Matthew 6:12. Verse 26, but if ye do not forgive, is missing from some of the oldest manuscripts and is widely judged to have been drawn in from the Matthew parallel, a textual note the bench states plainly without weakening the principle either verse teaches. An unforgiving heart and a believing prayer do not travel together in either reading.

Mark 11:27-28

There come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders, the full and formal representation of the Sanhedrin's three constituencies, ritual, teaching, and civic authority, united in one delegation. By what authority doest thou these things presses directly at the temple cleansing of the day before, a direct challenge to a claim they had watched him act on. The question is genuine on its surface and hostile underneath, an attempt to force him into either blasphemy or retreat before the crowd.

Mark 11:29-33

I will also ask of you one question turns their trap back on itself, the baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men, a dilemma they cannot answer without either conceding John's testimony to Christ or provoking the crowd who held John a prophet. Their reasoning is recorded with unusual candor, a private calculation of political risk rather than a search for truth, ending in the evasive we cannot tell. Jesus refuses in turn to answer men who will not own what they already know, and the exchange closes the question of his authority without granting them the answer they never meant to receive honestly.
