Job 18:1-4

Bildad opens his second speech irritated rather than instructed, how long will it be ere ye make an end of words, and wherefore are we counted as beasts, and reputed vile in your sight answers Job's earlier charge that the friends know nothing an animal could not teach. He teareth himself in his anger reads Job's grief as self-destructive rage rather than honest lament, the same tearing language Job used of God at 16:9 now turned back on Job himself. The double question that follows, shall the earth be forsaken for thee, and shall the rock be removed out of his place, accuses Job of demanding that the moral order of the world be suspended for his single case. Henry notes Bildad hears complaint as an assault on providence itself, and answers with the fixed order of nature rather than with any comfort for the man in front of him.

Job 18:5-7

The poem proper opens with light: the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine, a household's lamp and hearth-fire both failing together. The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his candle shall be put out with him repeats the figure a second time, the darkness closing in on the tent from every side. The steps of his strength shall be straitened, and his own counsel shall cast him down turns from light to motion, a strong man's stride narrowed until his own planning becomes the trap that brings him down. Delitzsch reads the doubled light imagery as Bildad's deliberate opening move, setting the poem's key before the trap figures that follow.

Job 18:8-10

Three verses gather six words for a trap in quick succession, net and snare in verse eight, gin and robber in verse nine, snare again and a trap in verse ten, a concentration of vocabulary the bench treats as deliberate piling rather than accidental repetition. He is cast into a net by his own feet makes the wicked man the author of his own ruin, walking into dangers his own steps have set. Job will answer this exact doctrine two chapters later, naming God rather than the wicked man's own feet as the one who compassed him with a net. Clarke reads the pile-up of near-synonyms as a device common to Hebrew poetry, stacking images rather than adding new information with each word.

Job 18:11-14

Terrors shall make him afraid on every side moves the poem from trap to pursuit, driving the wicked man to his feet in flight from dangers named only as terrors. Job 18:15-19

It shall dwell in his tabernacle, because it is none of his hands the wicked man's own tent to a stranger, and brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation recalls the judgment on Sodom as the mark of a house under a curse. His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above shall his branch be cut off completes a tree destroyed from both ends at once, root and branch together. His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street presses the destruction past his own death into the loss of any memory of him among the living. Job 18:20-21

They that come after him shall be astonied at his day, as they that went before were affrighted closes the poem with the wicked man's fate becoming a byword across generations rather than a private ruin. Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that knoweth not God states Bildad's summary verdict plainly, tying every image in the poem to one cause, a man who does not know God. Gill notes that Bildad never names Job anywhere in the speech, leaving the application to Job's own conscience rather than stating it outright. The poem's whole force depends on Job accepting the label the friends have been pressing on him since chapter four, and the next chapter shows him refusing it.
