Isaiah 8:1-2

Take thee a great roll: The Lord instructs Isaiah to write a name that will become a living sign on a great roll or tablet, Maher-shalal-hash-baz, hasten the spoil, hurry to the prey, in ordinary script a passerby could read rather than a scribe's private note. Two named witnesses, Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah, certify the writing before the child is even conceived, so that when the name proves true no one can claim the prophecy was written after the fact. Barnes reads the double witness as a legal safeguard, evidence sealed in advance against a fulfillment still future.

Isaiah 8:3-4

she conceived, and bare a son: Isaiah goes to the prophetess, his own wife by the plain reading of the text, and she conceives and bears a son whom the Lord names Maher-shalal-hash-baz before he draws his first breath. Before the child can say father or mother, the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried off before the king of Assyria, a horizon of months rather than years. Gill and Clarke both set this beside the child of chapter 7 as a second dated clock ticking toward the same Assyrian invasion, this one shorter and more precise than the first.

Isaiah 8:5-6

spake also unto me again: The Lord speaks to Isaiah again, turning from the child's name to the nation's own choice: Judah refuses the waters of Shiloah that go softly, the mild flowing spring inside Jerusalem's walls, and rejoices instead in Rezin and the son of Remaliah, the very enemies Isaiah had just told Ahaz not to fear. The waters of Shiloah were commonly read as a figure for the gentle rule of the house of David under the Lord's own promise, a quiet provision the people trade for confidence in stronger-looking allies. Henry and Barnes both draw the same contrast: gentle waters despised in favor of the flood about to be summoned in the next verse.

Isaiah 8:7-8

the waters of the river, strong and many: Because the people rejected the gentle waters of Shiloah, the Lord brings up against them the waters of the river, strong and many, the king of Assyria in all his glory overflowing every channel and bank, the flood turned from figure to fact. The invasion reaches even to the neck, Judah nearly but not wholly drowned, and the outstretched wings that fill the land belong to a bird of prey rather than a shelter. In the middle of the threatened flood the prophet addresses the land directly as thine, O Immanuel, the second occurrence of the name from chapter 7, now naming the very ground under threat as his.

Isaiah 8:9-10

Associate yourselves, O ye people: The prophet turns to address the nations directly, Associate yourselves and ye shall be broken in pieces, the command repeated three times like a drumbeat mocking every alliance the peoples of the earth can form against Judah. Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought, because the counsel of every confederacy fails against the counsel the Lord himself already purposed. The refrain closes on the same word that named the child of chapter 7, for God is with us, Immanuel now confessed as reason rather than merely announced as a name.

Isaiah 8:11-13

spake thus to me with a strong hand: The Lord speaks to Isaiah with a strong hand, instructing him not to walk in the way of this people, meaning the fear of confederacy that had gripped Ahaz and the nation alike in chapter 7. Where the people cry conspiracy at every rumor of alliance against them, Isaiah is told not to fear their fear nor dread what they dread, but instead to sanctify the Lord of hosts himself, letting him alone be the object of fear and dread. Clarke reads this as the pivot of the chapter, the prophet modeling in his own person the trust Ahaz had refused when offered a sign.

Isaiah 8:14-15

for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence: The Lord who is sanctuary to those who fear him becomes a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, the same object producing opposite effects depending on whether it is trusted or resisted. The New Testament returns to this verse twice: Paul fuses it with the sure foundation stone of Isaiah 28:16 at Romans 9:33, and Peter cites it directly at 1 Peter 2:8 of those who stumble at the word, being disobedient. Delitzsch and Barnes both note the stumbling is not the stone's fault but the reader's response to it, many among them shall stumble and fall and be snared and be taken, judgment falling on unbelief rather than on the sanctuary itself.

Isaiah 8:16-18

Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples: Isaiah is told to bind up the testimony and seal the law among his disciples, sealing here meaning kept safe and certified for a later day rather than hidden from view, since a sealed document was a legal instrument protected against tampering until it was needed. The prophet then declares his own posture in the meantime, I will wait upon the Lord, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him, patient trust standing in deliberate contrast to Ahaz's earlier refusal to wait on a sign at all. Isaiah and the children the Lord has given him, Shear-jashub and Maher-shalal-hash-baz, stand as signs and wonders in Israel, their very names a sealed testimony walking the streets of Jerusalem.

Isaiah 8:19-20

Seek unto them that have familiar spirits: When the nation is told to consult mediums with familiar spirits and wizards that peep and mutter, the prophet answers with a question that exposes the absurdity outright: should not a people seek unto their God, for the living to the dead? The test that follows has stood as the standard for weighing any teaching ever since, to the law and to the testimony, if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Henry and Gill both read verse 20 as the chapter's own hinge back to verse 16's sealed testimony, the written word set up as the fixed measure against which every voice, prophetic or necromantic, must be tried.

Isaiah 8:21-22

hardly bestead and hungry: Those who reject the testimony pass through the land hardly bestead and hungry, and hunger turns to rage rather than repentance, cursing their king and their God as they look upward for relief that does not come. When they look instead to the earth, they find only trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish, and are driven into deeper darkness still. The chapter that opened with a swift and certain sign closes on unrelieved gloom, the very darkness chapter 9 opens by naming and then answering with a great light.
