Hebrews 3:1-2

Wherefore gathers the whole comparison of chapters 1 and 2 into a command, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus, the only place in the New Testament Jesus is called apostle, one sent, alongside high priest, the one who represents. He was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house, the comparison opening on shared ground rather than contrast, since Numbers 12:7 is the verse behind Moses' faithfulness and the letter will not diminish Moses to exalt Christ. The address, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, names the readers by the very privilege the warning that follows will urge them to keep.

Hebrews 3:3-4

For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses argues from an analogy any builder understood, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house, Christ compared to Moses as architect to structure rather than as one servant to another. The analogy tightens in verse 4, every house is builded by some man, but he that built all things is God, an unstated identification the reader is left to draw, since the house Moses served and the house Christ built are ultimately the same house God himself framed. Moses is honoured as a faithful part of the very house Christ, as its builder, stands over.

Hebrews 3:5-6

Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant names his office precisely, therapon, an honoured attendant rather than a hired hand, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after, his whole ministry pointing forward rather than standing complete in itself. But Christ as a son over his own house reverses servant and master, the house Moses served now called Christ's own possession, whose house are we, the readers themselves named as that house. The condition follows immediately, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end, the letter's let-us thread turned into a membership test the warning that follows will press hard.

Hebrews 3:7-9

Wherefore, as the Holy Ghost saith opens the letter's longest single citation, Psalm 95:7-11, and the ascription to the Holy Ghost rather than to David treats the psalm as the Spirit's own present address, to day if ye will hear his voice carrying real urgency into the readers' own moment. Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation names Israel's rebellion at Meribah, Exodus 17:1-7 and Numbers 20 the events behind it, in the day of temptation in the wilderness. Hebrews 3:10-11

Hebrews 3:15-16

While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation repeats the citation's refrain to introduce a rhetorical question the Greek allows to be read two ways. For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses can be read as a plain statement, some but not all rebelled, or, following an old and well attested reading, as a question, for who, when they had heard, did provoke, was it not all that came out of Egypt. On either reading the historical fact behind it is severe, of the generation that left Egypt only Joshua and Caleb entered Canaan, Numbers 14:29-30 the account behind the letter's argument.

Hebrews 3:17-19

But with whom was he grieved forty years turns the question format into the chapter's closing argument, was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness, Numbers 14:29's own verb echoed in the Greek. And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not repeats the pairing of sin and unbelief a third time in three verses, the writer pressing one point from every angle available. So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief closes the chapter on the single word the whole argument has narrowed to, unbelief, apistia, the same danger named at verse 12 and the very thing chapter 4 will now press toward the readers' own rest.
