Hebrews 2:1-2

Therefore marks the first application of the entire opening argument: because the Son is better than the angels, we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift past them like a boat slipping its mooring, the sense behind let them slip. The comparison in verse 2 reaches back to Jewish tradition that the law at Sinai was given through angelic mediation, a reading Acts 7:53 and Galatians 3:19 both share, and if that word proved stedfast with a just recompence for every transgression, the greater word carries greater weight. The first of the letter's five warnings opens quietly, an exhortation rather than a threat, its force built on the argument chapter 1 has already made.

Hebrews 2:3-4

How shall we escape: How shall we escape becomes the warning's real question, and its ground is comparative: if neglecting the law brought recompense, neglecting so great salvation leaves no lesser exposure. The gospel's chain of transmission is stated plainly, first spoken by the Lord himself, then confirmed unto us by them that heard him, the apostolic generation standing as witnesses rather than originators. God's own confirming witness follows, signs and wonders, divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost distributed according to his own will, the working of the Spirit affirmed here as living confirmation rather than a closed chapter of church history.

Hebrews 2:5

For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come turns the argument toward a third proof of the Son's superiority, the coming age itself. Angels served the old order, delivering the law and ministering to the heirs of salvation as chapter 1 closed by saying, but the world to come, the age this whole letter anticipates, is subjected to someone else entirely. The someone else is about to be named from Psalm 8, and the pronoun's absence from this verse is itself the tension the citation resolves.

Hebrews 2:6-8

One in a certain place testified quotes Psalm 8:4-6 without naming David, a common form of citation in the letter, and the question what is man, that thou art mindful of him levels a large claim on a small creature, crowned with glory and honour and given dominion over the works of God's hands. He left nothing that is not put under him presses the psalm's own totality, yet but now we see not yet all things put under him admits the plain fact that the world still resists its appointed king. The gap between the psalm's claim and present experience is the very gap the next verse closes.

Hebrews 2:9

But we see Jesus: But we see Jesus answers the gap directly, the son of man of Psalm 8 identified by name for the only time in the chapter, made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death and now crowned with glory and honour on the far side of it. The lowering was not permanent but purposive, for the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he should taste death for every man, the verb tasting carrying the full bitterness rather than a passing sip. Psalm 8 was written of mankind in general and finds its fullest answer in the one man who fulfilled it, humanity's appointed dominion secured in him before it is ever seen in his brethren.

Hebrews 2:10-13

It became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things states the fitness of the cross before naming it, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings, the letter's perfect thread turning here on suffering rather than sinfulness, since the Son had none to begin with. He that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one, a shared humanity that lets him call them brethren without shame, and three citations follow to prove the claim from Scripture itself. Psalm 22:22 supplies I will declare thy name unto my brethren, Isaiah 8:17 supplies I will put my trust in him, and Isaiah 8:18 supplies behold I and the children which God hath given me, each text putting the Messiah among his own family rather than above it.

Hebrews 2:14-15

Because the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same, the incarnation stated as a deliberate joining to a shared condition rather than an appearance of one. The purpose clause is stark, that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil, the letter naming Satan outright and crediting him with a real, if derivative, power exercised through death, the ground the seed war thread has carried since Genesis 3:15. The rescue reaches the fear itself, and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage, death's terror named as a form of slavery the incarnation was sent to break.

Hebrews 2:16

For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham states the letter's whole comparison in miniature, help offered to Abraham's line and not to the fallen angelic order the earlier chapters have set beneath the Son. The wording deliberately answers the question a Jewish reader raised by chapter 1's angel citations might ask, why the Son took a body at all, and answers it with covenant particularity rather than a general rescue of every creature that fell. The seed of Abraham reaches forward to Galatians 3:16's own reading of the same promise, the singular seed fulfilled in Christ before it is shared by faith with Abraham's spiritual children.

Hebrews 2:17-18

a merciful and faithful high priest: Wherefore draws the conclusion the whole chapter has been building toward, in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, the necessity language matching verse 10's it became him, two different Greek terms converging on one purpose. The office named for the first time in the letter is a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people, mercy toward the people and faithfulness toward God held together in the one title chapters 5 through 10 will unfold. Because he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted, sympathy earned rather than merely declared, the ground the letter returns to at 4:15.
