Haggai 2:1-3

A second dated oracle arrives less than a month after the work resumed, in the seventh month, on the twenty-first day, which the bench notes falls during the feast of tabernacles, the very feast that had recalled Solomon's dedication of the first temple (1 Kings 8:2). Addressed again to Zerubbabel, Joshua, and the residue of the people, the word turns to the discouragement building already showed: who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory, and how do ye see it now, is it not in your eyes as nothing? Some elders present, Ezra 3:12 records, had wept aloud at the new foundation for remembering Solomon's house, and Haggai names that grief before he answers it.

Haggai 2:4-5

Against the comparison just raised, three commands fall in one breath, be strong Zerubbabel, be strong Joshua, be strong all ye people of the land, and work, for I am with you, saith the Lord of hosts. The ground of the courage is not the building's present size but a covenant already sworn, according to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you, fear ye not. Henry reads the appeal to the exodus covenant as Haggai reaching past the diminished temple to the changeless promise behind every temple, the Lord's abiding spirit rather than any structure's dimensions carrying the assurance.

Haggai 2:6-7

The promise widens from covenant memory to cosmic upheaval, yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land, and I will shake all nations, language the epistle to the Hebrews quotes directly of the removal of everything shakeable so that what cannot be shaken may remain (Heb 12:26-27). Then the crux clause, the desire of all nations shall come, and I will fill this house with glory: the older bench, following the Vulgate's singular desideratus, reads a messianic coming, the desired one himself entering the house; the more recent philological reading takes the Hebrew as a plural or collective, the valuable things or treasures of the nations brought in, both readings are named and neither is pressed as settled. Either way the bench agrees the glory promised outstrips gold and silver, since the next verse names who owns those already.

Haggai 2:8-9

The silver is mine, and the gold is mine: The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the Lord of hosts answers any anxiety that the house cannot be worthily furnished, since its true owner already holds the world's wealth in his hand. Then the chapter's central claim: the glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, and in this place will I give peace. The bench reads the fulfillment on two tracks named together, the physical enlargement and adornment under Herod that made the Second Temple's courts far grander than Zerubbabel's original, and the greater claim that the Lord of the house himself once walked its courts in the person of Christ, a glory no gold ever supplied to Solomon's temple.

Haggai 2:10-14

A third oracle, three months later, comes as a case put to the priests as the law's own experts: does holy flesh carried in a garment's skirt make bread or wine holy by touching it, and the priests answer no, holiness does not transfer by contact through an intermediary. Does a person unclean by touching a corpse make food unclean by touching it, and the priests answer yes, uncleanness does transfer that way. Haggai draws the ruling onto the nation itself, so is this people, and so is this nation before me, and so is every work of their hands, and that which they offer there is unclean: the people's own defilement, the bench reads, had been spreading to their offerings all along, even the offerings brought toward the unfinished house, and no amount of resumed labor could cleanse by contact what needed its own repentance.

Haggai 2:15-17

Consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the Lord, turns the nation back to its own recent history for the evidence: when one came to a heap expecting twenty measures there were but ten, when one came to the winepress for fifty vessels there were but twenty, the harvest shrinking under the Lord's own hand. I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands, yet ye turned not to me repeats the covenant-curse vocabulary of chapter 1 and echoes the same refrain Amos had used a century earlier of a people disciplined again and again who still would not return (Amos 4:6-11), the bench naming the shared formula.

Haggai 2:18-19

The same call to consider repeats, now dated precisely to the day the temple's foundation was actually laid, and the question turns from past failure to present fact: is the seed yet in the barn, has the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree yet brought forth? The crops have not yet ripened when the promise is spoken, which the bench reads as the point, the blessing is dated from this day, not from any harvest already visible, so that when the harvest does come it can be read only as the Lord's answer and not as ordinary seasonal luck. From this day will I bless you closes the oracle on pure futurity, obedience credited before its fruit appears.

Haggai 2:20-23

A fourth oracle on the same day is addressed to Zerubbabel alone, and it returns to the shaking of verse 6 with its political edge made explicit, I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen, the chariots and their riders falling by their own brothers' swords. Then the book's closing sentence: in that day will I take thee, O Zerubbabel my servant, and will make thee as a signet, for I have chosen thee. The bench reads the signet as a deliberate reversal of Jeconiah, Zerubbabel's own grandfather, whom the Lord had pulled off his hand as a signet ring in judgment (Jeremiah 22:24): the exile that stripped the ring is answered by a governor of the very same line restored to the honor his grandfather lost. Zerubbabel stands in both Matthew's and Luke's genealogies of Christ (Matt 1:12, Luke 3:27), and the positions are named without settling one over the other, some of the bench reading the signet as Zerubbabel's own personal restoration and covenant pledge that the Davidic line would not end in Jeconiah's curse, others reading it further forward to the greater son of David the line would finally produce.
