Galatians 1:1-2

Paul opens with his credentials before he opens with grace, a shape found nowhere else in his letters. Not of men denies any human origin for his apostleship, and neither by man denies any human channel for it; the office came straight from Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised him from the dead. Lightfoot reads the double negative as already answering the Galatian teachers who had questioned whether Paul's authority matched Peter's.

Galatians 1:3-5

The greeting is standard, grace and peace, but verse 4 loads it at once with the letter's argument: Christ gave himself for our sins to deliver us out of this present evil age. Deliver translates exaireo, a rescue out of a condition rather than a payment of a debt, and Paul is already framing salvation as an exodus the Galatians are being talked into reversing. The doxology that follows is the last calm note before verse 6 turns.

Galatians 1:6-7

Every other Pauline letter opens with thanksgiving for the church addressed; Galatians has none, and I marvel stands in its place. Removed translates metatithesthe, a present tense verb for changing political sides or deserting a post, and Paul frames it as leaving him that called you, meaning God himself, not merely a change of teacher. Verse 7 names the real issue: there is no second gospel, only a perversion of the one gospel dressed as an alternative.

Galatians 1:8-9

or an angel from heaven: Paul repeats the curse in successive verses, the only letter in the canon to pronounce anathema twice on the same point, and widens the target to include an angel from heaven so no messenger's rank could shield a false gospel from judgment. The target is the message, not any person by name, and the exposition keeps the curse exactly where Paul aims it: at whoever preaches a different gospel, however credentialed. Chrysostom reads the repetition as proof Paul meant no rhetorical flourish but a settled sentence.

Galatians 1:10

Paul turns the accusation his opponents likely made, that his gospel was crafted to please Gentile converts, back on itself: a man who still sought to please men would not be Christ's servant at all. The verse sets the terms for everything that follows, since the chapter's whole defense is that his gospel came from God and answers to no human court.

Galatians 1:11-12

Paul states his thesis plainly before he proves it: the gospel he preaches is not after man, kata anthropon, not a human product in its origin or its shape. He received it neither from a human teacher nor by instruction but through revelation of Jesus Christ, language that claims the same direct disclosure the other apostles received, and the narrative from verse 13 to the end of chapter 2 exists to establish this one claim.

Galatians 1:13-14

persecuted the church of God: Paul's proof begins with the last person anyone would expect to carry a Gentile gospel: a man who wasted the church beyond measure and outran his peers in zeal for the traditions of the fathers. The Pharisaic zeal named here is the same energy Acts 8 and 9 record turned toward Stephen's stoning and the Damascus road arrests, so the conversion that follows has nothing of gradual persuasion in it.

Galatians 1:15-17

Paul describes his call in language echoing Jeremiah 1:5, set apart from the womb, to argue that God's purpose for him predates his own choices entirely, zeal and all. Immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood answers a suspicion the Galatian teachers may have raised, that Paul's gospel was later smoothed to agree with the Jerusalem apostles; instead he went into Arabia first, away from any human court that could have shaped his message.

Galatians 1:18-20

after three years: The first Jerusalem visit comes only after three years, and even then Paul saw Peter and James the Lord's brother alone, not the whole apostolic company, a fifteen-day visit too brief to have supplied his gospel's content. Before God, I lie not underlines that Paul is offering sworn testimony on a point his credibility now depends on. Lightfoot dates the interval from the Damascus revelation, folding the Arabia stay into the three years rather than adding to them.

Galatians 1:21-24

regions of Syria and Cilicia: Paul's next years in Syria and Cilicia kept him personally unknown to the Judean churches, who had only the report that their former persecutor now preached the faith he once destroyed. The chapter closes with those churches glorifying God in me, not in Paul, the same redirection of praise that ends verse 5's doxology. The whole chapter has argued one point from a dozen angles: the gospel Paul preaches came from God before it ever touched Jerusalem.
