Acts 18:1-3

Paul leaves Athens, where the philosophical hearing produced only a small harvest, and comes to Corinth, a Roman colony and trade hub notorious across the ancient world for moral looseness. There he finds Aquila and Priscilla, Jewish refugees from Rome after Claudius expelled the Jews, an edict the Roman historian Suetonius independently records and dates to about AD 49, anchoring the chronology of Paul's whole mission. Being of the same craft, tentmaking, likely working leather for tents and sails, Paul lodges and works alongside them, supporting himself rather than drawing on the young churches he plants. The bench reads the detail as Paul's own later boast made visible, that he preached the gospel without charge rather than be chargeable to anyone.

Acts 18:4

Every sabbath Paul reasons in the synagogue, persuading both Jews and the Greeks who attended alongside them, the same pattern of scripture argued and consciences addressed that marked Thessalonica and Berea. Corinth's synagogue drew Gentile hearers already sympathetic to Jewish monotheism, the natural first audience for a message announcing that monotheism fulfilled. The verb persuaded, used repeatedly of Paul's preaching in Acts, describes reasoned argument rather than mere proclamation, the method Luke consistently attributes to him. The bench notes how much of Paul's Corinthian ministry, later addressed at length in his letters, begins in exactly this unglamorous weekly labor of argument before it becomes the famous church of two long epistles.

Acts 18:5-6

When Silas and Timotheus arrive from Macedonia, Paul is pressed in the spirit and testifies plainly to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ, the claim that has provoked opposition in every synagogue so far. When they oppose him and blaspheme, he shakes his raiment and pronounces your blood be upon your own heads, I am clean, echoing the watchman language of Ezekiel 33, where a prophet is cleared of blood guilt once he has faithfully warned. From henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles, Paul says, the second of the three turning sayings that punctuate Acts alongside 13:46 and 28:28, and the bench reads it as local and situational rather than a final verdict on Israel, since Paul reasons in the very next synagogue he enters. His own anguish over Israel in Romans 9 through 11, written between these sayings, argues against reading any of them as God's last word to the Jewish people.

Acts 18:7-8

Paul moves his base of operations next door, into the house of Justus, a Gentile God-fearer whose house stood joined hard to the synagogue, so that Paul preaches within earshot, almost within sight, of the congregation that rejected him. Crispus, the chief ruler of that very synagogue, believes with his whole household, a conversion at the top of the institution Paul has just left, which Paul himself later recalls baptizing personally in 1 Corinthians 1:14. Many Corinthians hearing believe and are baptized, the household and public shape of these conversions matching the pattern already seen at Philippi and Thessalonica. The bench reads the placement of Justus's house as more than convenience, a standing invitation left at the synagogue's own door.

Acts 18:9-10

The Lord speaks to Paul in the night by a vision, be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace, a direct word of encouragement that answers whatever discouragement the synagogue's rejection and the city's reputation had produced. I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee, the Lord promises, for I have much people in this city, a statement that reframes Corinth's apparent hostility as a field already ripe with those the Lord has appointed to believe. The vision anchors the eighteen-month ministry that follows, the longest single stay recorded anywhere in his travels apart from Ephesus, in a direct divine assurance rather than in Paul's own reading of the city's prospects. Acts 18:11

Paul continues at Corinth a year and six months teaching the word of God, the longest settled ministry Luke records for him outside Ephesus, and the letters written to this church later show how much material that extended teaching produced. The stability answers the promise of verse 10 in the plainest way scripture can answer a promise, by simply reporting that it held. Corinth becomes one of Paul's most extensively documented congregations precisely because he had the time here to lay a full foundation. Acts 18:12-13

When Gallio is proconsul of Achaia, the Jews rise up together against Paul and bring him to the judgment seat, the bema whose excavated platform still stands in Corinth's forum today. An inscription found at Delphi fixes Gallio's term to around AD 51 to 52, giving the whole chronology of Paul's ministry one of its few fixed anchors in secular history. The charge, that Paul persuades men to worship God contrary to the law, is deliberately ambiguous between Roman law and Jewish law, an ambiguity the accusers likely intended to force a ruling either way. The bench treats the Gallio inscription as among the strongest pieces of external confirmation for Luke's accuracy anywhere in Acts.

Acts 18:14-16

Before Paul can even open his mouth to defend himself, Gallio cuts the case off, telling the Jews that if this were a matter of crime or wrongdoing he would hear them, but a question of words and names and their own law is no business for a Roman court to judge. He drives them from the judgment seat, a ruling that in effect grants Christianity the same legal protection Judaism already held as a recognized religion under Roman law, since Gallio treats the dispute as internal to Judaism rather than as a new and suspect cult. The bench reads Gallio's dismissal as providential timing, a favorable precedent set early enough to shelter the Gentile mission's expansion for years afterward. His indifference to the fate of Sosthenes, beaten before his own tribunal, is the one shadow on an otherwise consequential ruling.

Acts 18:17

The Greeks in the crowd seize Sosthenes, the synagogue's chief ruler, and beat him in full view of the judgment seat, apparently an outburst of the crowd's own antagonism toward the Jewish community once Gallio has shown he will not intervene. Gallio cared for none of those things, Luke records, the same indifference that protected Paul now leaving Sosthenes unprotected. Many identify this Sosthenes with the Sosthenes Paul later names as a brother in 1 Corinthians 1:1, which if correct means the man beaten for opposing Paul later stood beside him as a fellow believer, though the identification cannot be proven from the text alone. The bench leaves the question of identity open while noting how fittingly it would close the scene if the two men are the same.

Acts 18:18

Paul stays on a good while longer, then sails for Syria with Priscilla and Aquila, having shorn his head at Cenchrea, Corinth's eastern port, because of a vow. The grammar leaves it possible that the vow and the shorn head belong to Aquila rather than Paul, since he is the nearer antecedent in the Greek sentence, and both readings have held commentators across the centuries; most, however, take it as Paul's own vow, likely a temporary Nazirite vow of thanksgiving of the kind described in Numbers 6. Such a vow required the hair to be cut at its beginning and again at the temple at its close, which would explain Paul's urgency to reach Jerusalem for the feast mentioned in the verses that follow. The bench treats the detail as evidence of how thoroughly Paul, apostle to the Gentiles, still practiced the customs of his own people even as his gospel crossed every ethnic line.

Acts 18:19-21

Paul comes to Ephesus and leaves Priscilla and Aquila there while he himself enters the synagogue to reason with the Jews, a first brief visit that plants the seed for the extended ministry of chapter 19. When the Ephesians ask him to stay longer he declines, promising I will return again unto you, if God will, a conditional promise the bench reads as Paul's habitual submission of his own plans to providence rather than reluctance to commit. He then sails from Ephesus, the last stop in this stretch of the account before the open sea carries him east. The bench notes how carefully Paul keeps this particular promise, since the very next chapter opens with his return to Ephesus and the fullest ministry of his career.

Acts 18:22-23

Landing at Caesarea, Paul goes up, likely to Jerusalem though the city is not named, and salutes the church before going down to Antioch, the church that had first sent him and Barnabas out and had commissioned him again for this second tour. After some time there he departs once more, traveling in order through Galatia and Phrygia, revisiting the churches planted earlier and strengthening the disciples in them. The verse marks the quiet close of one tour and the opening steps of the next, a transition Luke passes over in a single sentence though it likely covered many months of travel. Acts 18:24-26

Apollos arrives at Ephesus, a Jew of Alexandria described as eloquent and mighty in the scriptures, a city whose famous library and Jewish scholarly community, including the philosopher Philo, make his learning unsurprising. Instructed in the way of the Lord and fervent in spirit, he teaches accurately what he knows, yet knows only the baptism of John, a partial understanding that leaves him proclaiming the Baptist's preparatory message without the fuller revelation of Pentecost. He speaks boldly in the synagogue, and Priscilla and Aquila, hearing him, take him aside privately and expound the way of God more perfectly, a correction offered with evident tact rather than public rebuke. The bench notes the reversal of expectation, a tentmaker and his wife instructing one of the most learned men to appear in the book, and reads it as a caution against measuring spiritual understanding by eloquence or education alone.

Acts 18:27-28

When Apollos is disposed to cross into Achaia, the Ephesian brethren write ahead exhorting the disciples there to receive him, an early instance of the church's own letters of commendation smoothing the path for traveling teachers. Once arrived he helps the believers greatly, since he mightily convinces the Jews in public, showing by the scriptures that Jesus is the Christ, the very argument Paul himself has used from city to city. Apollos's ministry at Corinth becomes significant enough that a faction there later claims his name in the divisions Paul rebukes in 1 Corinthians 1 and 3, though nothing in Acts suggests he sought or approved of any such rivalry.
