1 Thessalonians 3:1-2

Wherefore signals a decision forced by concern, when we could no longer forbear, the ache of not knowing the young church's condition growing too great to bear. Paul thought it good to be left at Athens alone, giving up his own companion in a hostile philosophical city so that Timotheus could go instead, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, three titles stacked to establish his authority to speak for Paul. The purpose was pastoral rather than merely informational, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith, strengthening and consoling named as one errand.

1 Thessalonians 3:3-4

The purpose clause continues from Timothy's mission, that no man should be moved by these afflictions, moved carrying the sense of being shaken loose, unsettled from a fixed place rather than merely troubled. Yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto grounds the answer in prior teaching, suffering named as the church's calling rather than a surprise that has overtaken it. Verse 4 recalls that Paul had told them this in advance, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation, so that the persecution now come to pass confirms the apostle's word rather than casting doubt on it.

1 Thessalonians 3:5

Paul names his fear directly, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, the devil's proper title here, the tempter, the same title used at Matthew 4:3 of his approach to the Lord himself. The danger feared is not merely suffering but its exploitation, persecution used to pry converts loose from a faith only weeks old. Our labour be in vain states the stake for the mission itself, a fear Timothy's report in the following verses will answer with relief rather than confirm.

1 Thessalonians 3:6-7

Timotheus came from you unto us reverses the anxious sending of verse 2, and the report answers every fear at once, good tidings of your faith and charity, the first half of the letter's opening triad both intact under pressure. Good remembrance of us always and desiring greatly to see us added affection to endurance, the church's warmth toward its absent founders undimmed by suffering. Verse 7 names the effect on Paul himself, we were comforted over you in all our affliction and distress by your faith, the Thessalonians' steadfastness reaching back to steady the apostle in his own hardship.

1 Thessalonians 3:8

For now we live states Paul's own sense of life itself as bound up in the church's condition, ministry so identified with its fruit that the church's standing becomes the apostle's own life. If ye stand fast in the Lord names the one condition, standing rather than achievement, perseverance in a relationship already established rather than a new work to complete. The verse compresses the pastor's own stake in his people into a single line, their steadfastness experienced as his own breath.

1 Thessalonians 3:9-10

The thanksgiving verse 9 opens cannot find adequate words, what thanks can we render to God again for you, the report of the previous verses having produced a joy the sentence itself strains to hold, the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God. Prayer follows praise without pause, night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, the same longing named already at the chapter's end. That which is lacking in your faith names the letter's own purpose without any accusation, a young church's faith complete in kind and still growing in measure, the gap this epistle exists partly to fill.

1 Thessalonians 3:11

The prayer report becomes prayer itself, God himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you, Father and Son named together as one source of the single verb direct, a high view of the Son's person stated in passing rather than argued. The request is modest and concrete, safe passage back to a church he has just said his life depends on. Satan's hindering named already in this letter stands behind the plainness of the ask, a return not yet granted and prayed for anyway.

1 Thessalonians 3:12

The prayer widens from Paul's own return to the church's inner life, the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, love named as the grace still to grow rather than a fixed possession. Even as we do toward you sets the missionaries' own conduct as the measure, the same pattern of imitation already traced in chapter one. Love that reaches toward all men rather than only the household of faith anticipates the letter's later command to follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men, the letter's ethic never closing in on itself.

1 Thessalonians 3:13

The prayer's purpose clause reaches the chapter's true destination, to the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, sanctification framed as the settled aim of increasing love rather than a separate demand. Even our Father repeats the intimacy of verse 11's address even while the horizon widens to judgment, before God naming the standard the heart must meet. The chapter closes on the letter's third parousia beat, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints, the saints who accompany him read by most commentators as departed believers already gathered to him, the same company chapter 4 will describe being caught up to meet him.
