1 Chronicles 28:1-2

David assembles the full national leadership to Jerusalem: princes, captains, stewards and mighty men gathered from every office chapter 27's rosters named. This scene moves the charge to Solomon from the private setting of chapter 22 into a public assembly, so the nation itself witnesses what David commits to his son. He calls the coming house a house of rest for the ark and a footstool for God, marking the earthly temple as subordinate to the throne of heaven itself.

1 Chronicles 28:3-4

The reason God refused David the temple repeats what chapter 22 already told Solomon in private: a man of war who has shed blood does not build the house of rest. The Chronicler then traces the choosing that put David there in the first place: the LORD chose Judah out of the twelve tribes, David's own house out of Judah, and David himself out of his father's sons. Each step narrows the promise to one man, the same sorting principle chapter 1's genealogy used on the nations before it ever reached Abraham.

1 Chronicles 28:5-7

the throne of the kingdom of the Lord: Verse 5 is the only place in Scripture that calls the throne of Israel the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel, a title verse 29:23 repeats when Solomon actually sits on it. In Chronicles the monarchy is the LORD's own throne held in trust, not simply David's dynasty, which is why the promise can survive the loss of every earthly king. The kingdom is established forever, but the clause added in verse 7, if he be constant to do my commandments, ties Solomon's own house to obedience even while the wider promise to David stands secure.

1 Chronicles 28:8

David charges Israel to keep and seek for all the commandments of the LORD, calling the assembly to witness the charge as Moses called heaven and earth to witness at the end of his own law in Deuteronomy 30. The land is framed as an inheritance to be left for the children after them, so the charge binds a generation not yet born to a covenant made in this room. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown read the whole verse as an echo of Moses's own farewell exhortation.

1 Chronicles 28:9

David's charge narrows from the nation to one son, and the sentence he gives Solomon states the book's own doctrine to a single man: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever. The verb Chronicles uses to measure every king in the books that follow, seek, is spoken here first to the king who will be measured by it, echoing the sole occurrence of if ye seek him, he will be found of you already given at 15:2. Serving God with a perfect heart and a willing mind is set against a God who searches all hearts, so the charge allows no gap between the outward act and the inward motive.

1 Chronicles 28:10

The charge to build an house for the sanctuary closes with three words David will say again in full at verse 20, be strong, and do it, a shorter first sounding of the formula before its fuller statement closes the chapter. John Gill reads the sentence as encouragement to set about the work with vigour and resolution rather than as a bare command.

1 Chronicles 28:11-13

David hands Solomon a full architectural plan: porch, houses, treasuries, upper chambers, inner parlours, the place of the mercy seat, the courts, the surrounding chambers and the courses of priests and Levites who will serve within it. Albert Barnes reads the pattern as a written set of directions rather than a vision seen once and remembered, the same conclusion the chapter itself states plainly at verse 19. Nothing here parallels Kings, which records the finished temple's dimensions but never this planning scene; the whole charge is material Chronicles alone preserves.

1 Chronicles 28:14-18

The gold and silver are itemized down to the weight of every candlestick, table, basin, fleshhook and bowl, an inventory with no equivalent in the account of Solomon's finished work in 1 Kings 7. The list culminates in the chariot of the cherubims, David's own name for the two large cherubim whose wings would span the holy of holies wall to wall, a detail Matthew Henry ties to the cherubim as the chariots of God in Psalm 68. Weight recorded this precisely turns the temple's furnishing from a builder's estimate into a document David could hand his son and say the LORD himself had numbered it.

1 Chronicles 28:19

in writing by his hand upon me: David states plainly how he had the pattern: the LORD made me understand in writing by his hand upon me, a claim of written revelation rather than a builder's memory or a private vision only reported after the fact. Commentators draw the plan to Moses receiving the tabernacle's pattern in the mount at Exodus 25:40, a correspondence the text itself invites by using the same word, pattern, for both structures. Spurgeon preached the verse as a picture of a church built only by what God has commanded, never by human design, in his sermon titled God's Handwriting Upon David.

1 Chronicles 28:20-21

David closes with Joshua's own formula, be strong and of good courage, fear not, nor be dismayed, the charge Moses gave Joshua at Deuteronomy 31:6 and the LORD repeated to him at Joshua 1:5, promising I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee in both places. Matthew Henry reads the same promise as the ground Hebrews 13:5 later applies to every believer, not to a king alone. The chapter ends with material help named beside the formula: the courses of priests and Levites, every willing skilful man, and the princes and people wholly at Solomon's commandment, so courage is not asked of a man left to work alone.
