Do not rob a poor man because

on Proverbs 22:22-23

"Do not rob a poor man because he is poor, and do not crush the afflicted at the gate" names the two easiest targets. The warning comes with a promise, for "the LORD will take up their case" as their advocate and "will plunder those who rob them."

This verse gives the reason for the warning of verse 22. The poor who have no one to stand for them at the gate have the LORD as their advocate. The one who robs them is robbed in turn, and the penalty matches the crime.
