Four wagons - unto the sons of Merari - Because they had the boards, bars, pillars, and sockets of the tabernacle to carry, Num 4:31, Num 4:32, therefore they had as many more wagons as the Gershonites.

The Kohathites receive no carts, since “they were to carry on their shoulders the holy objects”, so the ark travels on men, never on wheels. At 2 Samuel 6:3-7 that rule is set aside and a man dies for it.

The Merarites carried the frames, crossbars, posts and bases under Ithamar, as Numbers 4:31-33 sets out. Matthew Henry reckons the silver bases alone at a hundred talents, above four tons, too much for four carts and eight oxen. Each base, he reckons, was one man's load.
