He did not take upon him to be king, as Abimelech did, but acted as a judge, in which office he continued twenty three years, and faithfully discharged it, and died in honour: and was buried in Shamir; the place where he executed his office. Tola follows Abimelech, who took a crown and is never called a judge, so the line resumes where chapter 9 broke it. The Hebrew verb behind "to save Israel" is the one used of the judges at 2:16 and 3:15. No enemy or battle is named in his twenty-three years.

John Gill places Tola's burial at Shamir, the town where he held his office, and reads his death as one in honour. He also reports a Jewish chronicle that set Tola's first year beside the reign of Priam in Troy. Verse 1 names Shamir as his home.
