on Judges 10:7-9
"He sold them," the verb of 2:14, 3:8 and 4:2, here to two buyers, the Philistines on the west and the Ammonites on the east. The land held down is "Gilead, the land of the Amorites," Sihon's kingdom in Numbers 21:21-26, and that title is Jephthah's whole argument at 11:19-22.

The distress of this verse is what brings the cry of verse 10. Ephraim, named here among the tribes attacked, is the tribe that quarrelled with Gideon at 8:1. Ammon now fights on both sides of the Jordan.
