Commentary
2 notes on this verseThe border of the Geshurites - The country of Bashan, in the days of Moses and Joshua, extended from the river Jabbok on the south to the frontiers of the Geshurites and Maachathites on the north, to the foot of the mountains of Hermon.
This site's exposition
the coast of Og king
on Joshua 12:4-6
Og is identified by what he was left over from, the remnant of the giants, and one of his two seats is Ashtaroth, where Genesis 14:5 puts the Rephaims that Chedorlaomer struck generations before Abraham entered the land. Deuteronomy 3:11 is the only place that gives a measure of him, an iron bedstead nine cubits long kept at Rabbath of the children of Ammon. Verse 6 calls Moses the servant of the Lord twice in one sentence and records the grant of Numbers 32:33 to Reuben, Gad and half Manasseh as settled, before a single western king is named.
How the passage was read
What the Jewish commentators add
Half of the Gilod, the boundry of Sichon. That was the border of Sichon’s domain, as we said above, 1 See Verse. that half of Gilod was his, and this second half was Og’s.
This section is reception history: how the passage was read and kept in the Jewish tradition. Where a reading parts from an essential of the Christian faith, the section says so at that point.
