5 notes on this verseTappuah - There were two places of this name: one in the tribe of Judah, Jos 15:34, and another in the tribe of Ephraim on the borders of Manasseh; but which of the two is meant here cannot be ascertained. See the note on Jos 15:53. Hepher - The same, according to Calmet, as Ophrah in the tribe of Benjamin, Jos 18:23.

The five kings of 10:3 who hid in the cave stand at verses 10 to 12, and Makkedah, where the cave was, at verse 16. Jerusalem is in the tally though 15:63 says Judah could not drive out its Jebusites, so a king killed and a city held differ here.

Clarke notes two towns named Tappuah, one in Judah at Joshua 15:34 and one on the border of Manasseh, which Joshua 17:8 gives to Ephraim. He leaves open which is meant. He records Calmet's view that Hepher is the Ophrah of Benjamin.
