And God will increase thy sufferings: as the refiner blows the fire with his bellows, so God will blow upon you with the fire of his wrath, Eze 22:21.

The house of Israel becomes dross in the Lord's furnace. Keil reads the figure against actual metallurgy, dross is what refining is meant to remove. Fairbairn notes the coming siege is pictured in advance under this same figure, the city gathered and blown upon in the fire of my wrath.

I will gather you into Jerusalem
Clarke calls Jerusalem the fining pot. The people of Judah would crowd into the city ahead of the Chaldean army, and the siege would become the fire. Jeremiah 35:11 shows the Rechabites entering Jerusalem for fear of that army.
