5 notes on this verseThus, &c. - This sacred writer having mentioned the anointing of Solomon and upon that occasion proceeded to give a farther account of Solomon's actual settlement in his kingdom, returns to his main business, to give an account of the close of David's reign and life.

on 1 Chronicles 29:26-28
The regnal summary gives David's reign as forty years, seven in Hebron and thirty three in Jerusalem, the same figures 2 Samuel 5:4-5 already recorded. Where 1 Kings 2 closes David's life with a deathbed charge to Solomon naming Joab and Shimei for reckoning, Chronicles leaves that scene out and says only that David died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honour. Adam Clarke reads the three phrases as everything a man could ask at the end of a life, years enough, purposes accomplished, and wealth left for the temple his son would build.

Thus David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel. As before related in this book, and in the second book of Samuel; his reign being long and glorious.
