The garden entered ('I am come into my garden, my sister, my bride'), then the Song's crisis: 'I was asleep, but my heart waked.' He knocks; she delays over small excuses; when she opens, 'my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone.' The watchmen that go about the city smite her. Charged by the daughters to say what her beloved is more than another, she answers with the bride's wasf of him: 'white and ruddy, the chiefest among ten thousand,' head of finest gold, 'yea, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend.'
