Romans 2:1-2

Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest turns chapter one's indictment of the pagan world back onto the reader who has been nodding along at it, since for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things closes the same trap Nathan set for David, the judge convicted by his own verdict. The bench reads the addressee as deliberately unnamed here, a moralizing man in general, Jew or Gentile, before Paul narrows the target to the Jewish teacher specifically at verse 17. But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things grounds the coming argument in a judgment that cannot be talked around by moral posturing, since it answers to reality rather than reputation.

Romans 2:3-4

And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God exposes the moralist's silent assumption, that condemning a sin in someone else buys an exemption from it in himself. Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering names the mercy that has so far withheld judgment, and the bench notes three distinct words piled together, goodness, restraint, and patience, each describing a different angle of the same unearned delay. Not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance states God's actual purpose in the delay, kindness meant to lead somewhere rather than kindness that excuses, a verse the New Testament's whole doctrine of God's patience leans on.

Romans 2:5-6

But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God turns the mercy of verse 4 into an indictment when it is refused, a hardened heart building up its own judgment the way a miser builds up money, one impenitent day at a time. Who will render to every man according to his deeds states the standard of that coming day, works as the visible evidence God judges by. The bench across every tradition agrees the verse describes the standard of judgment rather than the ground of salvation, which chapters 3 and 4 will locate in faith alone, deeds the fruit examined at judgment and faith the root that alone produces fruit God will accept.

Romans 2:7-8

To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life sets a pattern of persevering good works as the description of those judgment finds saved, and the bench divides over how the verse fits Paul's own gospel of faith without works. Some read the perseverance as the necessary evidence a true faith always produces, others as a standard no one but Christ actually meets, both readings held without settling the question here, since Paul himself will settle it at length by chapter 4. But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath names the opposite pattern, active resistance to a truth already known rather than mere ignorance of it, the same suppression language carried over from 1:18.

Romans 2:9-10

Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile carries the Jew first pattern of 1:16 over into judgment, the same priority in privilege becoming a priority in accountability. But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile balances the sentence exactly, the same order applied to reward, so that neither blessing nor judgment plays favorites by nationality once the principle of impartial judgment is stated. The bench reads Jew first here as historical priority in redemptive order, the gospel and its accountability both reaching Israel before the nations, rather than any inequality in the standard applied to each.

Romans 2:11

For there is no respect of persons with God states the principle the two preceding verses have just demonstrated, prosopolepsia, literally receiving a face, the favoritism a human judge shows toward rank or nationality. The bench reads the verse as the hinge of the whole chapter, since it forbids any reader from assuming Jewish descent alone secures a lighter judgment, the very assumption chapter 3 will name outright. Paul will apply the same word again at Galatians 2:6 and Ephesians 6:9, a settled conviction rather than a point made once and dropped.

Romans 2:12-13

For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law states the two standards judgment actually uses, the Gentile without the Mosaic law judged by whatever light he had, the Jew under the law judged by that law's own demand. For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified corrects the assumption that mere possession of the law could save, since the law never promised to justify anyone who merely owned a copy of it. The bench notes Paul is not here contradicting chapter 3's doctrine of justification by faith alone, but describing the law's own terms on its own ground, terms no one, Jew or Gentile, actually meets, exactly the point the next chapter drives home.

Romans 2:14-15

For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves grounds a doctrine of natural moral law parallel to 1:20's natural revelation, a conscience-written law available to every Gentile who never received Sinai. Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another describes conscience functioning as an inward court, some verdicts condemning and some defending. The bench reads this as answering in advance any objection that Gentiles could not fairly be judged for lacking Moses's law, since God's own witness was already written where no scroll was needed.

Romans 2:16

In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel names the judge of that coming day as Jesus Christ himself, the Father's judgment of every hidden thing carried out through the Son, the same office John 5:22 assigns him outright. According to my gospel does not mean Paul invented a private message, but that this final judgment through Christ is itself a settled article of the gospel he preaches everywhere, not a side detail. The bench notes the secrets, ta krypta, as the verse's own force, a judgment reaching motive and thought and not only visible deed, exactly the standard verses 14 and 15 have just shown the conscience already anticipates.

Romans 2:17-18

Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God turns the diatribe's unnamed moralist into a specific figure, a Jewish teacher confident in his covenant identity and resting on possession of the law itself. And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law grants the real privilege such a teacher holds, genuine knowledge of God's revealed will and a trained capacity to discern what matters most. The bench reads verses 17 through 20 as building the strongest possible case for this teacher's advantages before verse 21 turns the same list into an indictment, a rhetorical build Paul uses so the fall is felt rather than merely stated.

Romans 2:19-20

And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness lists the self-image such a teacher carried in the first century, a recognized office toward proselytes and the surrounding Gentile world. An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law finishes the list with a phrase the bench weighs carefully, morphosis, the outward shape or form of knowledge, a word Paul uses again of hollow religion at 2 Timothy 3:5, form present but the substance behind it about to be questioned. The list of five titles, guide, light, instructor, teacher, and possessor of the law's very form, sets up the sharpest possible contrast with the failures verse 21 names next.

Romans 2:21-22

Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself puts the question every such teacher must face before pressing it further, asking whether the man who preaches against stealing is himself a thief. Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery, and thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege presses two more counts, the second, hierosyleo, plundering temples, a charge the bench connects to a documented first century practice of profiting from idols publicly despised, temple robbery for resale rather than idol worship itself. The rhetorical form matches verse 1 exactly, the same judge who condemned another now condemned by his own standard, the repetition deliberate as Paul closes the circle he opened at the chapter's first verse.

Romans 2:23-24

Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God turns the boast of verse 17 into the very charge that condemns it, a law kept in word and broken in life dishonoring the God the law was meant to honor. For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written grounds the charge in Scripture itself, echoing Isaiah 52:5 and Ezekiel 36:20-23, where Israel's own conduct among the nations caused the watching world to blaspheme the God whose name Israel carried. The bench reads the citation as Paul's heaviest charge yet, not merely personal hypocrisy but a corporate failure that had already damaged God's reputation among the Gentiles for centuries before Paul wrote a word of this letter.

Romans 2:25-27

For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision states circumcision's value as conditional on obedience rather than automatic, a physical sign that can be nullified in God's own reckoning by the life lived after it. Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision reverses the case, an uncircumcised Gentile who keeps the law's righteousness credited as though circumcised, the same principle of reckoning, logizomai, that chapter 4 will use of Abraham's faith. And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law closes the argument with a picture that recurs across the letter, the outsider's obedience standing as a witness against the insider's disobedience, letter and circumcision no substitute for the righteousness they were meant to seal.

Romans 2:28-29

For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh redefines the identity the whole chapter has been testing, ethnicity and a physical mark no longer sufficient to answer the question the chapter opened with. But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter relocates the true mark to the heart itself, a circumcision the Spirit performs rather than a surgeon, language Paul develops again at Philippians 3:3. Whose praise is not of men, but of God closes the verse on a wordplay the Hebrew carries and the English cannot, Judah, Yehudah, built on the root for praise, so the real Jew is, by his very name, the one whose praise comes from God rather than from men, a verse standing behind the whole argument of chapters 9 through 11 that Israel's true identity was never merely genealogical.
