Romans 16:1-2

I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea: the word is diakonos, the same word rendered deacon at Philippians 1:1 and 1 Timothy 3:8, and the bench divides between the office reading and the general-service reading, both stated with their holders. She is also called prostatis, a succourer of many, and of myself also, the feminine of a term for patron and protector, a woman of standing who had stood over Paul's own needs; the letter to Rome travels in her care, as the subscription records. The site's own tradition, per the founder's ruling on women in ministry, reads her commendation at its full strength, and the note lets the two Greek titles carry the case.

Romans 16:3-5

Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus: the tentmaking couple of Acts 18 stand first among the greeted, expelled from Rome under Claudius, Paul's hosts at Corinth, Apollos's teachers at Ephesus, and now back in Rome with a church in their house. Who have for my life laid down their own necks: some risk unrecorded in Acts lies behind the clause, and all the churches of the Gentiles give thanks with him. Priscilla stands named before her husband here as in most of their New Testament mentions, a detail the commentators note without overworking; Epenetus follows, the firstfruits of Achaia, the first convert of a whole province remembered by name decades on.

Romans 16:6-7

Greet Mary, who bestowed much labour on us: the verb is kopiao, toil to weariness, and Paul will use it of three more women in verse 12, the chapter quietly recording that the heavy labor of the Roman church was in large part women's. Salute Andronicus and Junia, my kinsmen, and my fellowprisoners, who are of note among the apostles, who also were in Christ before me: Junia is a woman's name in the Greek and Latin record, and Chrysostom's exclamation stands as the ancient reading, how great the devotion of this woman, that she should be counted worthy of the appellation of apostle. The phrase's two constructions, noted among the apostles or noted by the apostles, are both stated; the site's tradition, per the founder's ruling, receives the older reading at full strength, apostle here in its wider messenger sense, and the pair were in Christ before Paul, believers of the first Jerusalem years.

Romans 16:8-11

Greet Amplias my beloved in the Lord opens a run of names the bench refuses to hurry past, since each is a person Christ purchased and Paul remembered: Urbane the helper, Stachys the beloved, Apelles approved in Christ, dokimos, a man who had come through some testing the church knew of. Them which are of Aristobulus' household and them of the household of Narcissus greet believers inside two great houses, and Lightfoot's identification of these with the brother of Herod Agrippa and with Claudius's famous freedman is the standing suggestion, Christians already inside the households of power. Amplias and Urbane are common slave names found in the imperial columbaria, and the exposition notes what the list quietly proves, a church of slaves and household servants greeted by name with the same honor as patrons.

Romans 16:12-13

Salute Tryphena and Tryphosa, who labour in the Lord: the names mean dainty and delicate, and the commentators old and new smile at the contrast Paul intends, the daintily named women described with the toil verb, and the beloved Persis beside them, which laboured much in the Lord, her labor past tense and completed, perhaps an older woman whose working years were behind her. Salute Rufus chosen in the Lord, and his mother and mine: if Mark 15:21 wrote for Rome, this Rufus may be the son of Simon of Cyrene, the identification the bench names as old and possible rather than certain, and his mother had somewhere mothered Paul himself. Four women in two verses carry the chapter's labor vocabulary, and the note counts them.

Romans 16:14-16

Salute Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermas, Patrobas, Hermes, and the brethren which are with them, then Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all the saints with them: two clusters that read like two house churches greeted by their members, and Nereus's name meets us again in the tradition of Domitilla's household a generation later. The holy kiss is commanded as the church's own greeting, and the bench notes its long liturgical afterlife and its meaning here, one family across two dozen names of Jew and Gentile, slave and patron, man and woman. The churches of Christ salute you widens the greeting to every congregation Paul had planted, the whole Gentile mission leaning into one Roman room.

Romans 16:17-18

Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them: the one warning in the chapter stands between the greetings and the grace, and its test is the doctrine already learned, the apostolic teaching as the fixed measure against which the dividers are marked. They serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, appetite wearing doctrine's clothes, and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple, chrestologia, the fair-speaking that the unsuspecting cannot parse. The bench notes the pastoral order, skopein then ekklinein, identify and then avoid, discipline by distance rather than by war, and the exposition leaves the warning exactly the size Paul made it.

Romans 16:19-20

Your obedience is come abroad unto all men: the Roman church's reputation, stated at the letter's opening (1:8), returns at its close, and Paul's charge is a proverb worth its own memory, wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil, expertise in goodness, innocence of evil's craft. And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly: Genesis 3:15 surfaces at the letter's end, the seed promise of the whole Bible applied to the church's own feet, the bruising Christ accomplished shared with his body, and the God of peace named as the one who does the crushing. The bench reads shortly as the apostolic nearness that every generation rightly inhabits, and the grace-benediction follows as the chapter's heartbeat.

Romans 16:21-24

Timotheus my workfellow, and Lucius, and Jason, and Sosipater, my kinsmen, salute you: the sending circle at Corinth now greets Rome, and then the amanuensis lifts his own head from the page, I Tertius, who wrote this epistle, salute you in the Lord, the one sentence in Scripture a secretary signs for himself. Gaius mine host, and of the whole church, is the baptized Gaius of 1 Corinthians 1:14, hospitality wide enough for a congregation; Erastus the chamberlain of the city carries the evidence lane's famous footnote, the Erastus pavement inscription at Corinth naming an aedile of that name who laid a pavement at his own expense, the identification possible and prized rather than proven. Quartus a brother closes the list with the chapter's plainest title, and the bench notes that brother, by the letter's own argument, is the highest thing said of anyone in it.

Romans 16:25-27

Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ: the letter that began with the gospel promised afore by the prophets (1:2) ends by calling the same gospel the revelation of the mystery kept secret since the world began, but now made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets made known to all nations for the obedience of faith. The bench holds the two halves together as Paul does, a mystery long hidden yet witnessed all along by the prophets' own scriptures, hidden and foretold at once, and the phrase obedience of faith closes the loop opened at 1:5, the letter's own name for its aim. The doxology's placement carries a textual note, some manuscripts locating it after chapter 14, stated honestly in the Mark-16 manner; its address does not move: to God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever, Amen, and the epistle ends where its argument always ends, in worship.
