Revelation 14:1

The scene turns from the beast's mark of chapter 13 to the Lamb's own seal: John sees him standing on Mount Sion with the hundred forty and four thousand of chapter 7, sealed again as having his Father's name written in their foreheads, the counter-mark to 13:16. This site's reading keeps the number Israel, the twelve tribes preserved through the tribulation and gathered now with their Redeemer on Zion, the place David's own Psalms fixed as the Lord's chosen seat. The chapter opens on triumph before its plagues resume, the Lamb's own people standing where the beast could not touch them.

Revelation 14:2-3

The voice from heaven gathers three sounds at once, many waters, great thunder, and harpers harping, and out of it comes a new song before the throne, the four beasts, and the elders, a song no man could learn but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth. The song is theirs alone because their redemption is theirs alone, a company brought through the specific trial the book has just described, and Gill reads the new song as fitted to their new and singular deliverance rather than closed to the rest of the redeemed in kind. The throne room that opened in chapter 4 hears fresh praise as each new company of the saved arrives.

Revelation 14:4-5

Not defiled with women, for they are virgins, is read by the main line figuratively, following the vine's tribulation from idolatry, spiritual harlotry the sense the same word carries at 2:20-22 and throughout the prophets against Israel's unfaithfulness, so the company is marked by purity from the beast's worship rather than by literal celibacy. They follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth, the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb, aparche, the first sheaf that consecrates the whole harvest to come. In their mouth was found no guile, without fault before the throne of God, language drawn from the spotless lamb of sacrifice and from Zephaniah 3:13's remnant that shall not speak lies.

Revelation 14:6-7

The first of three angels flies in mid heaven with the everlasting gospel to preach unto every nation, kindred, tongue, and people, a universal proclamation timed to the tribulation's darkest hour, standing beside the two witnesses of chapter 11 and the 144,000's own testimony as this site's answer to those who ask how anyone comes to faith once the church has gone. Its content is Fear God, and give glory to him, for the hour of his judgment is come, and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters, the Creator language of Exodus 20:11 turned into a summons at the world's last hour. The gospel here is eternal in scope, not a new message but the same good news at its final proclamation.

Revelation 14:8

The second angel announces what chapters 17 and 18 will unfold at length, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, the doubling itself an ancient prophetic form borrowed from Isaiah 21:9's cry over historical Babylon and now applied to the end-time system. She made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the cup-and-wine image that will govern chapter 17's portrait of the woman on the beast, her intoxicating false worship poured out to the whole earth. The fall is proclaimed here as already certain though its narrative is still three chapters off, prophecy's own habit of speaking the future as accomplished.

Revelation 14:9-11

The third angel's warning is the book's sternest line, spoken with a loud voice against any who worship the beast and his image and receive his mark: he shall drink the wine of the wrath of God, poured out without mixture, akratou, undiluted, into the cup of his indignation, and be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. The smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever, and they have no rest day nor night, language this site receives at its full weight rather than softened, the same eis tous aionas ton aionon formula that measures the devil's own sentence at 20:10. The warning is placed here, before the mark is ever taken by the reader's own generation, as mercy's own final word ahead of judgment.

Revelation 14:12-13

Here is the patience of the saints, hupomone, the steady endurance the whole book has called for since 1:9, defined again as those that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus, obedience and trust held together rather than set against each other. The voice from heaven commands John to write the book's second beatitude, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth, a specific comfort for those who hold fast through the tribulation's cost even to death, that they may rest from their labours, and their works do follow them, ta erga auton, present tense, still active and still counted. The chapter's harvest scenes that follow are framed by this promise, that faithfulness under the beast's terror is never lost from view.

Revelation 14:14-16

One like unto the Son of man, Daniel 7:13's title, sits on a white cloud with a golden crown and a sharp sickle, and the main line reads this rider as Christ himself, crowned and ready, rather than an ordinary angel, since no other figure in the book wears both the Son of man's title and a crown. An angel comes out of the temple crying Thrust in thy sickle, and reap, for the harvest of the earth is ripe, exeranthe, literally dried, fully ready, and he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle and the earth was reaped. This first harvest, of grain, is read by the main line as the ingathering of the righteous, distinct from the grape harvest of judgment that follows, Joel 3:13's own two harvest images divided here into their separate scenes.

Revelation 14:17-20

A second angel from the temple and a third from the altar, which had power over fire, direct the grape harvest, gather the clusters of the vine of the earth, for her grapes are fully ripe, the vine here the earth's own gathered wickedness rather than the true vine of John 15. The angel thrust in his sickle and cast the harvest into the great winepress of the wrath of God, and the winepress was trodden without the city, Isaiah 63:1-6's lone treader of the winepress, the Lord's own garments stained in that vision, now enacted in judgment at Armageddon's field. Blood came out of the winepress even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs, roughly the length of the land of Israel, a figure the main line reads as hyperbolic in scale, signaling a slaughter of the fullest measure rather than requiring a literal river; the parking order governs any further geographic mapping.
