Revelation 11:1-2

measure the temple of God: John is given a reed like a measuring rod and told to measure the temple of God, the altar, and its worshippers, while the outer court is left unmeasured and given over to the Gentiles, who tread the holy city underfoot for forty and two months. The site's futurist reading takes the temple as a literal, rebuilt structure standing in Jerusalem in the last days, the same forty-two months as the beast's grant of authority in 13:5. Other readers take the measuring as symbolic, marking off the true worshippers within a professing church from a merely outward Christianity, and the debate over which reading fits the vision is not settled by the text alone. The forty-two months equal the 1,260 days of verse 3 and the time, times, and half a time of 12:14, one period named three ways.

Revelation 11:3-4

The Lord grants power to two witnesses who will prophesy 1,260 days clothed in sackcloth, a preaching of repentance during days of judgment. Verse 4 names them the two olive trees and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth, an echo of Zechariah 4's vision of Zerubbabel and Joshua feeding the golden lampstand by the Spirit's oil. Their identity is argued: some hold Moses and Elijah, named by their signature miracles of turning water to blood and shutting heaven; others hold Enoch and Elijah, the two men Scripture never records dying; still others read two witnesses as corporate figures, the church's own testifying remnant in the last days. The number two answers Deuteronomy 19:15's requirement of two or three witnesses to establish a matter, whichever reading is taken.

Revelation 11:5-6

Fire proceeds from the witnesses' mouths and devours any who would harm them, and the one who tries must be killed in this same manner, judgment matching the crime as it did upon Elijah's captains in 2 Kings 1. They hold power to shut heaven, that it rain not during the days of their prophecy, and power over the waters to turn them to blood and to smite the earth with every plague, as often as they will. The miracles read as a deliberate echo of Moses before Pharaoh and Elijah before Ahab, the two great prophets of judgment and drought brought forward into the last days. The continuationist strength of the whole book stands here at its plainest: two ordinary witnesses work signs identical to the greatest prophets of the Old Testament, with the same power available and active in the last days as in the first.

Revelation 11:7-8

When the witnesses finish their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit makes war against them, overcomes them, and kills them, the beast of chapter 13 appearing here for the first time in the book's own order. Their bodies lie unburied in the street of the great city, called spiritually Sodom and Egypt, the city where also their Lord was crucified, a name most naturally read as Jerusalem under the two names of moral corruption and slavery to the world's power. The refusal of burial is itself the deepest insult the ancient world knew, turning the witnesses' deaths into a public spectacle rather than an honored end. The beast's first appearance already makes war on the church of the two witnesses before John describes him fully in chapter 13.

Revelation 11:9-10

People of every people, kindred, tongue, and nation gaze on the two dead bodies for three days and a half and refuse them burial, a global spectacle the book elsewhere reserves for the events of the last days alone. Those who dwell on the earth rejoice over them, make merry, and send gifts to one another, because these two prophets had tormented them, the only place in Revelation where the wicked celebrate rather than mourn. The reaction shows how much the witnesses' preaching had cost the unrepentant world, a plague of conviction they are glad to see silenced. Verse 10 seals the read of these earth-dwellers as the same class named throughout the book as those who reject the Lamb.

Revelation 11:11-12

After three and a half days the Spirit of life from God enters the two witnesses and they stand on their feet, a resurrection in full public view of the same nations that had gloated over their corpses, and great fear falls on all who see it. A great voice from heaven calls them up, Come up hither, and they ascend in a cloud while their enemies watch, the same cloud that carried the Lord away in Acts 1:9 and will carry the church in 1 Thessalonians 4:17. The pattern of death, resurrection, and ascension in the sight of enemies previews the pattern of the Lord's own passion and the hope held out to every believer. Their vindication is public because their humiliation was public.

Revelation 11:13

The same hour brings a great earthquake, a tenth of the city falls, and seven thousand men are killed, judgment following immediately on the witnesses' ascension. The remnant who survive are affrighted and give glory to the God of heaven, the one place in Revelation's judgment sequence where survivors respond with something like reverence rather than blasphemy. Whether this glory is genuine conversion or only forced acknowledgment of God's power is argued among commentators, since the text records the response without naming its depth. The earthquake closes the two witnesses' episode with the same note of terror and divine vindication that opened it.

Revelation 11:14

The second woe, the sixth trumpet's long judgment stretching back to 9:13, is now past, and the third woe, the seventh trumpet, is announced as coming quickly. The verse functions as a hinge, closing the long interlude of chapter 10 and 11:1-13 and returning the reader to the trumpet sequence left open since 9:21. The pace of the announcement, cometh quickly, matches the book's own urgency that these things must shortly come to pass. What follows is not further delay but the seventh trumpet itself, sounded one verse later.

Revelation 11:15

The seventh angel sounds, and great voices in heaven declare the kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ, who shall reign for ever and ever, the announcement made in accomplished fact before the events of chapters 12 through 19 unfold it in narrative. This is the seventh trumpet, the last of the three woes, and it contains within it the whole remaining action of the book down to the new creation, the same telescoping the book uses with the seals and vials. Handel's setting of this verse in the Hallelujah Chorus has carried its confession into the world's ears longer than any commentary. The verse answers Daniel 7:14's everlasting dominion given to the son of man and Psalm 2:8's promise of the nations for an inheritance.

Revelation 11:16-17

The twenty-four elders who sit before God on their thrones fall on their faces and worship, the same response given at every fresh unveiling of God's purpose throughout the book. Their doxology addresses him as Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come, though notably without the fourth phrase used in 1:4 and 4:8, and to come, since with the seventh trumpet the coming has now arrived. They give thanks that he has taken to himself his great power and has reigned, the elders' worship anticipating in heaven what earth has not yet seen accomplished. Their posture models the whole book's aim, to move a suffering church from complaint to worship before the victory is visible.

Revelation 11:18

The nations' anger and God's wrath arrive together, echoing Psalm 2's the heathen rage and he that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh, the rebellion and the judgment named in the same breath. The time of the dead is come, that they should be judged, and the servants, prophets, saints, and all who fear his name, small and great, receive their reward, while those who destroy the earth are themselves destroyed, a judgment matching the crime as with the witnesses' fire in verse 5. This verse compresses the whole final reckoning, resurrection, reward, and destruction, into a single sentence before the book returns to narrate each part at length in chapters 19 and 20. Small and great, the same phrase used of the wicked in 19:18 and 20:12, names a judgment with no exceptions on either side of the ledger.

Revelation 11:19

The temple of God opens in heaven and the ark of his testament is seen within it, the sign of the covenant kept safe above even as its earthly counterpart, lost since Jerusalem's fall to Babylon, has never been recovered on earth. Lightnings, voices, thunderings, an earthquake, and great hail follow, the fullest of the book's several theophany formulas, each occurrence adding an element to the last as the visions build toward the seventh vial's storm in 16:18-21. The sight of the ark answers Israel's ancient hope that God's presence and covenant faithfulness were never lost, only hidden from sight. The verse closes the trumpet sequence on the same note that opened the whole book, the assurance that heaven's temple stands behind everything earth is made to endure.
