Psalm 74

Psalms 74:1-3

The psalm opens as a direct address to an apparent absence, O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever, the sheep of thy pasture left under smoking anger. The plea that follows appeals to God's own history with this people, remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old, and asks him to look at what has become of Zion, the perpetual desolations the enemy has made in the very sanctuary.

Psalms 74:4-6

The enemies roar within the very place of worship and set up their own ensigns where God's own were displayed, an occupation of the sanctuary itself rather than only its destruction. The wreckage is pictured in the language of a forest felled, a man once famous for wielding axes upon the thick trees, then the carved work of the house broken down at once with axes and hammers, the temple's craftsmanship undone tool by tool.

Psalms 74:7-8

The destruction is total, fire cast into the sanctuary, the dwelling place of God's name defiled to the ground, and the enemy's stated intent matches the result, let us destroy them together, extending to every synagogue, every place of assembly for God, in the land. Which national catastrophe stands behind these verses is debated, most of the older commentators reading the Babylonian destruction of Solomon's temple, others reading a later crisis, the positions named without a verdict the text itself does not give.

Psalms 74:9

The deepest wound named in the psalm is not the wreckage itself but what has gone quiet alongside it, we see not our signs, there is no more any prophet, neither is there among us any that knoweth how long. Silence where God once spoke is felt as its own form of abandonment, worse than the ruins because it removes even the hope of an answer.

Psalms 74:10-11

The lament turns to direct appeal, O God, how long shall the adversary reproach, shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever. Why withdrawest thou thy hand, even thy right hand, pluck it out of thy bosom pictures God's power deliberately folded away in the garment, and calls for it to come out and act.

Psalms 74:12-15

The complaint turns to remembered acts of ancient victory, God my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth, dividing the sea, breaking the heads of the dragons and of leviathan in the waters. The commentators name two readings of this sea imagery, one hearing it of Pharaoh and Egypt under the figure of the sea monster as at Isaiah 51:9-10, the other hearing a wider victory over the chaos of the deep, and both point to the same crossing at the Red Sea that fed the wilderness with springs cleaved from the rock.

Psalms 74:16-17

From redemption the psalm turns to creation as further evidence of the same King's authority, the day is thine, the night also is thine, light and the sun prepared by his hand. All the borders of the earth, summer and winter, set by him means the appeal that follows rests on both his saving acts and his ordering of the world itself.

Psalms 74:18-21

The requests gather to a close, remember the reproach, and do not deliver the soul of thy turtledove, Israel pictured as a helpless bird, to the multitude of the wicked. Have respect unto the covenant, since the dark places of the earth are full of cruelty, and let the oppressed not return ashamed but the poor and needy praise thy name, the plea moving from memory to covenant obligation to hoped-for outcome.

Psalms 74:22-23

The psalm closes on an appeal for God to act as though the cause were his own rather than only Israel's, arise, O God, plead thine own cause, since the reproach and the rising tumult of the enemies are ultimately aimed at him. No resolution is narrated, and the older writers read the unanswered ending as itself an act of faith, willing to leave the outcome and the timing with God rather than demand them.
