Psalm 33

Psalms 33:1-3

This psalm carries no title in the Hebrew, confirmed against the literal rendering that keeps titles elsewhere, unusual immediately after the full superscription of the psalm before it, and some readers in church history have taken it as continuing psalm 32's praise rather than opening a fresh prayer. Rejoice in the Lord answers directly the shout for joy that closed the previous psalm, praise now commanded rather than merely invited. Sing unto him a new song, play skilfully with a loud noise calls for both freshness and craft, the new song a recurring Psalter phrase for a mercy too large for the old words.

Psalms 33:4-5

The word of the Lord is right anchors the psalm's praise in character rather than in circumstance, and all his works are done in truth ties what God says to what he does without gap. He loveth righteousness and judgment names the moral content of that word, and the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord widens the claim from Israel's own history to the whole creation. Barnes reads the pairing of word and works as the psalm's own ground for trusting the sovereignty named later in the chapter.

Psalms 33:6-7

By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth sets word and breath side by side as the agents of creation, close to Genesis 1's and God said and the Spirit of God moved. Older readers, Augustine among them, hear the Son and the Spirit named here ahead of either title being given, a reading offered as tradition rather than as the verse's own plain claim. Psalms 33:8-9

Let all the earth fear the Lord: Let all the earth fear the Lord widens the address from Israel's own congregation to every nation, on the ground stated in the next verse, for he spake, and it was done, he commanded, and it stood fast. That verse restates Genesis 1's fiat creation in miniature, speech alone sufficient, with no second cause named. Gill reads the two verbs, commanded and stood fast, as the whole doctrine of providence compressed into four words, the same word that made the world still holding it in place.

Psalms 33:10-11

The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought sets human planning against divine speech, the same word that built the world now unmaking the schemes of nations. The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever answers it in the next line, the contrast turning on the single word counsel, one kind that fails and one that cannot. Henry applies the verse to every generation's confident plans against God, read here as a standing pattern rather than one historical episode.

Psalms 33:12

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord: Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord returns the Psalter's first word to a whole people rather than one man, and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance names the covenant standing behind the blessing. The verse sits at the psalm's center, the pivot between the Lord's rule over all nations in verses 10 and 11 and his particular watch over the one nation he has chosen. Barnes notes the verse became Israel's own confession of identity, echoed through the Psalter's later national psalms.

Psalms 33:13-15

The Lord looketh from heaven, he beholdeth all the sons of men widens the psalm's lens from the chosen nation back out to the whole human family, watched from one vantage point above every border. He fashioneth their hearts alike names a common creation behind every difference of nation and language, the same maker behind every heart he then considers. Delitzsch reads fashioneth in the singular, one shaping act, against the plural hearts it produces, the psalm's own argument that no nation's plans are hidden from the maker of every plan.

Psalms 33:16-17

For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name closes the circle back to the rejoicing that opened the psalm, now grounded in the character laid out across the chapter rather than commanded cold.
