Job 38:1-3

out of the whirlwind: The whirlwind speech opens with a question rather than an answer, who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge, turning the case Job has been building against God back on the man who built it. Gird up now thy loins like a man repeats the posture of a wrestler or a servant readying for work, the same figure used elsewhere in the book of bracing for labor. Henry reads the two commands together as God accepting Job's demand for a hearing on terms Job never expected, questions rather than a verdict.

Job 38:4-6

laid the foundations of the earth: Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth places Job outside the one event every claim of his has assumed a right to judge. The measures, the line, the sockets and the corner stone borrow the vocabulary of a building site, and Delitzsch notes the same architectural terms return centuries later at Isaiah 28:16 for the stone laid in Zion. Gill reads the string of questions as pressing one point only, that a man absent from creation's laying has no standing to indict its Governor.

Job 38:7

the morning stars sang together: The morning stars sang together and the sons of God shouted for joy is the sole occurrence of that phrase in Scripture, the fifth and last of five Old Testament uses of sons of God, the others at Genesis 6:2, 6:4 and Job 1:6 and 2:1. The verse places the same company at creation that opened Job's own frame in heaven, and the readings on their identity divide: angelic beings present at the foundation of the world, so Delitzsch and most of the older bench; the same council read together with Genesis 6, so others. Gill notes the joy of the verse standing in deliberate contrast to Job's curse of his own birth day at chapter 3, one day of the world's history sung over and one day of a man's life cursed.

Job 38:8-11

Who shut up the sea with doors pictures the ocean born like a child breaking from the womb, then swaddled in cloud and confined behind bars no flood has passed. Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further sets the sea's own shoreline as a standing order, and Henry reads the image as a restraint God does keep even where his creatures cannot see it. The verse answers Job's own storm imagery from earlier chapters with the storm's maker naming its limit.

Job 38:12-15

Hast thou commanded the morning asks whether Job has ever once set the day in motion, and the dayspring taking hold of the ends of the earth is pictured shaking the wicked out of it like dust from a garment. Turned as clay to the seal reads the dawn as an impression stamped on the world each day, every shape thrown into relief the way a seal marks wax or clay. Delitzsch notes the wicked's light withholden and the high arm broken as the same daylight that reveals also exposing what darkness had covered, a moral use folded into a question about sunrise.

Job 38:16-18

Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea moves the questions from sky to deep, asking whether Job has walked the sea floor or the paths to death's own house. The gates of death and the doors of the shadow of death are named as places shut to the living, and Clarke reads the pairing as deliberate, the deep and the grave both closed to a man who still complains he cannot see God's reasons. Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth closes the unit asking for a survey no living man has made.

Job 38:19-21

Where is the way where light dwelleth asks Job to locate light and darkness as though they kept houses he could visit and return from. Verse 21 turns openly sarcastic, knowest thou it, because thou wast then born, or because the number of thy days is great, since Job's age is nothing beside the ages the question assumes. Henry reads the irony as the chapter's method throughout, each question answerable only by God and unanswerable by the very man who has been demanding answers.

Job 38:22-24

The treasures of the snow and the treasures of the hail are named as stores kept in reserve against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war, weather held like armaments in God's own arsenal. Barnes reads the military language deliberately, the same snow and hail that fall as ordinary weather also standing ready as instruments of judgment when the day calls for them. By what way is the light parted closes the pair asking how the east wind is loosed to scatter across the earth, a distribution no farmer or general could arrange.

Job 38:25-27

Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters asks who channels rain and lightning the way an engineer channels an aqueduct. The rain falls on the wilderness, wherein there is no man, to satisfy ground no human eye will ever see watered, and Henry reads this as the chapter's clearest answer to any claim that God governs only for man's benefit. Gill notes the tender herb springing forth in an empty wilderness as providence caring for a hidden audience Job never considered.

Job 38:28-30

Hath the rain a father asks for a genealogy no one can supply, ice and hoary frost said to come out of a womb and be gendered, borrowing the same birth language used of the sea earlier in the speech. The waters are hid as with a stone and the face of the deep is frozen pictures winter as a lock set over the ocean itself. Clarke reads the string of birth and burial figures for water in its three states, sea, rain and ice, as one sustained argument that every form water takes answers to a single unseen governor.

Job 38:31-33

Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion names the same two constellations Job himself named earlier in the book among the wonders God works without being called to account. Mazzaroth and Arcturus extend the survey across the visible sky, and Delitzsch reads the questions as asking not merely whether Job can see the stars but whether he can govern their courses and seasons. Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven closes the unit demanding rule over a dominion Job has never held even in miniature.

Job 38:34-36

Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds asks for a command the clouds would obey, and the lightnings answering here we are pictures obedience Job himself cannot summon from the weather that has already ruined him. Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts turns the questions inward for the first time in the speech, wisdom named as a gift placed in the heart rather than a power seized by strength. Henry reads the turn as preparing the ground for the living creatures named soon after, moving from sky and sea toward the wisdom built into life itself.

Job 38:37-38

Who can number the clouds in wisdom and who can stay the bottles of heaven keeps the rhetorical question form while narrowing toward the ground, the dust growing into hardness and the clods cleaving together as rain works its way into soil. Gill reads the agricultural image as deliberately plain after the sky's grand catalogue, the same rain that falls unseen on the wilderness also finishing its work in a field a farmer will later till. Wesley notes the verse as a quiet hinge before the chapter turns fully to the animals in the verses that follow.

Job 38:39-41

Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion opens the creature catalogue proper, asking whether Job feeds the predators crouched in their dens waiting to lie in wait. Who provideth for the raven his food closes the chapter naming the least likely creature for divine care, and Delitzsch notes the young ravens crying unto God as the verse's own claim, an unclean bird's hunger still heard and answered. Henry reads the lion and the raven together as opposite ends of the animal kingdom, the fiercest predator and the most despised scavenger, both fed by the same hand Job has been questioning.
