Job 26:1-4

Job's fifth reply opens by turning Bildad's own words back on him: how hast thou helped him that is without power, how savest thou the arm that hath no strength answers a speech of only six verses with the sharpest sarcasm Job has yet used. Henry reads the four questions as one charge, that Bildad brought no counsel and no strength to a man who needed both. What follows is deliberate overmatch: Job answers a short speech with the longest single description of God's power any of the three friends has offered.

Job 26:5-6

The dead things formed under the waters are the Hebrew rephaim, the shades of the underworld, trembling beneath the sea itself. Hell is naked before him translates Sheol, and destruction renders Abaddon, both places of the dead lying open to God with no covering left to hide behind. Gill reads the pair as Job's opening move in the cosmology, from the deepest place a body can go to the height of the heavens the chapter turns to next.

Job 26:7-9

He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing is the sole occurrence of that phrase in Scripture and the evidence lane's keeper verse: the poem states what it states, an earth suspended on nothing, without the text pressing any modern cosmology of its own. Delitzsch reads the emptied space as the northern sky opened over a void, the ancient poet's picture of unsupported weight held up by nothing but the speaker's will. He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds without the cloud bursting under their weight extends the same wonder to a sky that holds rain it does not spill by accident.

Job 26:10-11

He hath compassed the waters with bounds continues the horizon imagery, the sea held to its circle at the line where day and night meet. The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof pictures the sky's own supports shaking at a single word of rebuke. Clarke notes the pillars as poetic rather than architectural, the towering peaks that seem from ground level to hold up the horizon itself.

Job 26:12-13

He divideth the sea with his power answers the friends' cosmology with the same sea-conquest language the Psalms and the prophets use of creation, and by his understanding he smiteth through the proud turns that power against every rival force. His hand hath formed the crooked serpent stands close to the vocabulary of Isaiah 27:1, where the Lord punishes leviathan that crooked serpent, and the readings divide over whether the phrase names an ordinary creature of the deep or draws on the same combat imagery Isaiah later turns to judgment. Delitzsch and Barnes set out both readings without settling which the poet intended.

Job 26:14

Lo, these are parts of his ways closes the cosmology with its own confession of limits: everything just catalogued is only the edge, a fringe of God's actions rather than their sum. How little a portion is heard of him anticipates the whirlwind speeches to come, where the Lord will ask Job the very questions this chapter cannot answer about his own works. Watson reads the last line, the thunder of his power who can understand, as Job's honest admission standing over against the friends' confident explanations of providence throughout the debate.
