James 1:1

James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, opens by yoking the two titles side by side, the same modest self-designation Paul and Peter chose for the Lord's own brother. The address goes out to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, the diaspora synagogue's own language kept rather than dissolved into a general church greeting. The letter assumes Jewish believers as Jewish believers, honored in their own name from its first line.

James 1:2-4

My brethren, count it all joy sets the letter's paradox on its first line, joy commanded over trials rather than merely endured through them. The trying of your faith worketh patience, hupomone, the staying power that holds under load rather than escaping it. Let patience have her perfect work names the goal, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing, spiritual maturity produced by the very trials the world calls loss.

James 1:5

If any of you lack wisdom sets the invitation plainly, wisdom for bearing the trials just named rather than abstract learning. Let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not answers the Lord's own Matthew 7:7 teaching, ask and it shall be given, with a Father who does not reproach the asker for having to ask. The generosity is unconditional, liberally, haplos, open handed and without a grudging afterthought.

James 1:6-8

But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering, ties the promise of verse 5 to a condition, not doubt about God's existence but a divided heart about whether he will answer. He that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed, the sea's own instability borrowed as the picture, and such a man ought not to think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man, dipsuchos, a word James may have coined for this letter, is unstable in all his ways, the divided soul unable to hold a straight course anywhere, not only in prayer.

James 1:9-11

Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted turns the world's ladder upside down, poverty in Christ counted as elevation because the poor brother is already an heir of the kingdom. But the rich, in that he is made low reverses the same ladder for wealth, since as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. The sun's burning heat that withers the grass and scorches the flower is Isaiah's own figure for human glory, and so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways, his pursuits perishing with him.

James 1:12

Blessed is the man that endureth temptation closes the trial thread opened at verse 2, the same trying now named a blessing on the far side of it. When he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life is the wreath of the games, stephanos, awarded not for winning but for finishing the course under pressure. The crown is what the Lord hath promised to them that love him, the promise binding endurance to love rather than to mere willpower.

James 1:13

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God, refuses the oldest excuse, blaming the trial's source for the temptation it becomes. For God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man states the truth without qualification, testing and enticing kept as two different acts even where the same trial serves both. The trial that came from God to produce patience is not the temptation that comes from within to produce sin, and the letter will not let the two be confused.

James 1:14-15

But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed locates temptation's real source inside the man, hunting and baiting language borrowed from fishing and fowling. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin traces the anatomy of a fall as a birth, desire's own child. And sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death completes the lineage, desire to sin to death, the same three stages Genesis 3 already walked.

James 1:16-17

Do not err, my beloved brethren warns against the very confusion verse 13 corrected, God as the source of evil. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights answers it directly, every good thing traced to its true origin rather than to the God who is blamed for temptation. With whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning states the Father's immutability against the sun and moon he made, whose light shifts and eclipses while his own never does.

James 1:18

Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth roots the new birth in God's own choice, not human merit, the gospel itself the begetting word. That we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures names the purpose, believers as the first sheaf of a harvest still to come, the whole creation's own hope bound up in it. The verse stands as the letter's own answer to any reading of chapter 2 as salvation earned, since the begetting is entirely his will before any work of ours is named.

James 1:19-21

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath turns the letter toward practice, the ear opened before the mouth and the temper both. The wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God denies anger any part in producing the goodness it claims to defend. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness calls for a moral housecleaning, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls names the word already planted, emphutos, as the thing to be received rather than resisted.

James 1:22-24

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only names the letter's central thread, deceiving your own selves warning against a hearing that mistakes itself for obedience. The hearer who is not a doer is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass, a reference to the bronze mirrors of the ancient world, imperfect and easily forgotten. He beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was, the mirror's image gone the moment the man turns from it, hearing without any lasting effect.

James 1:25

But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein answers the mirror of verse 23 with a better instrument, a law that frees rather than restrains because it is written within rather than merely upon tablets. He being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work names the same doer thread again, obedience as the mark of true hearing. This man shall be blessed in his deed, the blessing found in the doing itself and not merely in some reward attached afterward.

James 1:26

If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue exposes a religion that is all appearance, chalinagogeo, the same bridling image the letter will use again at 3:2 for the whole body. But deceiveth his own heart names the danger precisely, self-deception rather than merely hypocrisy toward others. This man's religion is vain, mataios, empty and without substance, whatever its outward form.

James 1:27

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father answers the vain religion of verse 26 with the true article, defined not by ritual but by two concrete tests. To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction names practical mercy toward the most defenseless in the ancient world, the same class the prophets defended. And to keep himself unspotted from the world completes the definition, mercy outward and holiness inward held together as one religion rather than two.
