Chapter summary

The song of Moses and Miriam. ‘I will sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.’ The first song of the Bible is a song of redemption. It names the LORD a man of war; remembers the drowned horsemen; looks forward to the trembling of Edom, Moab, and Canaan; and closes with ‘the LORD shall reign for ever and ever’. Miriam and the women dance with timbrels. Then the march inland. At Marah the bitter waters are made sweet by a tree. At Elim twelve wells and seventy palms. The song of Revelation 15:3 calls itself ‘the song of Moses, the servant of God’.
