Ecclesiastes 4:1

The Preacher turns from abstract observation to a scene he says he considered directly, all the oppressions done under the sun and the tears of such as were oppressed, with no comforter said twice in the one verse, once for the tears and once for the power ranged against them. Henry reads the doubled phrase as deliberate, the absence underlined rather than merely noted, since a comforter present even once would have changed the report. The verse names a real grief the book does not explain away and offers no answer to within this verse alone.

Ecclesiastes 4:2-3

The Preacher praises the dead which are already dead above the living who are yet alive, and rates better than both the one who has not yet been and so has not seen the evil work done under the sun. Gill reads the statement as grief speaking rather than doctrine, a verdict wrung from watching oppression with no comforter in sight rather than a settled teaching on death and birth. The under-the-sun key governs the verse: it reports where unrelieved oppression can drive honest reflection, not the last word Scripture gives on life and death.

Ecclesiastes 4:4

The Preacher names a second grief behind ordinary labour, that travail and right work alike spring from one man being envied of his neighbour, achievement itself driven by rivalry rather than by the work's own worth. Bridges reads the observation as unmasking a motive most workers would rather not examine, competition doing the labour that love or duty might otherwise have done. The verdict follows the pattern of the whole book, this is also vanity and vexation of spirit, filed without a program attached.

Ecclesiastes 4:5-6

Two opposite errors stand side by side, the fool who folds his hands together and eats his own flesh, laziness that consumes the very life it spares, against the driven man whose two hands stay full with travail and vexation of spirit. Between them the Preacher sets the proverb that gives the passage its balance, better is an handful with quietness than both the hands full with travail, enough gained in peace outweighing more gained at the cost of rest. Gill reads the handful as the book's answer to both errors at once, neither idleness nor restless rivalry but contentment with a measured portion.

Ecclesiastes 4:7-8

The Preacher returns to his search and finds a fresh case, a solitary man with no child and no brother, no end to his labour, and an eye never satisfied with the riches he keeps gathering. The man himself never asks for whom do I labour and bereave my soul of good, working without the question that might have stopped him, and the Preacher supplies the question the man never puts to himself. Wesley reads the portrait as the answer to chapter two's argument turned personal: wealth with no one to share it with is vanity, yea, a sore travail, whatever it produces.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Two are better than one: Against the isolated man of the verses before, the Preacher sets out the case for companionship in four parts: a good reward for shared labour, one lifting up the other who falls, warmth shared where one sleeping alone stays cold, and two standing together against one who prevails where a lone man could not. Henry reads the fourfold structure as building deliberately, each image adding a kind of help a solitary man goes without. The passage closes on the proverb the case was built to reach, a threefold cord is not quickly broken, read since the Targum as friendship strengthened further still by a third bound in with the first two.

Ecclesiastes 4:13-16

The chapter's last case sets a poor and wise youth against an old and foolish king who will no longer be admonished, wisdom outweighing both poverty and rank, even here where the fool holds the throne. Verses 14 and 15 trace one such youth rising from prison to reign while a king born to his kingdom ends poor, and a whole people gathering after the new ruler, the reversal Scripture elsewhere records in Joseph's own rise. Yet verse 16 closes the case the way the book closes every case, no end of all the people who came before and none who come after will rejoice in him either, so that even the wisest rise still ends in vanity and vexation of spirit under the sun.
