Ecclesiastes 11:1-2

Cast thy bread upon the waters: Cast thy bread upon the waters carries two readings across the bench: Delitzsch takes it as maritime trade, grain shipped out in hope of a return cargo after the risk of the sea, while Henry reads it as alms and liberality, generosity given without the certainty of seeing its fruit again. Both readings share the same shape, an act performed now whose outcome lies beyond the giver's control or sight, which fits the chapter's larger argument about acting under uncertainty. Give a portion to seven, and also to eight extends the same counsel into diversification, spreading what is given or risked because no man knows what evil shall be upon the earth.

Ecclesiastes 11:3-4

If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth: If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth states two fixed facts of nature, rain falls when the clouds are full and a fallen tree stays where it falls, neither one waiting on a man's permission or preference. He that observeth the wind shall not sow, and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap turns the same observation into a warning against excessive caution: a farmer who waits for perfect conditions before acting will never act at all. Clarke reads the verse as counsel against the paralysis that studies every risk instead of doing the work in front of it.

Ecclesiastes 11:5-6

thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit: Thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb names two of the era's genuine mysteries, the coming of life and breath, to argue from the greater unknown to the lesser: if these hidden workings of God cannot be traced, neither can the outcome of ordinary labor be known in advance. Even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all draws the conclusion the next verse acts on. In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand, since the sower cannot know beforehand whether this seed or that shall prosper, or whether both shall be alike good, so the counsel is to sow at both ends of the day rather than wait for a certainty that will not come.

Ecclesiastes 11:7-8

Truly the light is sweet: Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun states without qualification that ordinary life, sight and daylight themselves, is a good thing, the same voice that named vanity throughout the book also naming plain pleasure without apology. Verse eight balances the same claim against what is coming: let a man rejoice in many years, yet remember the days of darkness, since they shall be many. Bridges reads the pairing as the book's consistent method, real enjoyment commended and real mortality kept in view together, neither one cancelling the other.

Ecclesiastes 11:9-10

Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth: Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth issues a real command to enjoy life while it can be enjoyed, walking in the ways of the heart and the sight of the eyes without shame attached to the desire itself. But know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment attaches to the same sentence rather than following as an afterthought, so the bench reads the verse as permission and summons held together: enjoy your youth, and remember that every choice made in it answers to God. Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh applies the judgment clause practically, since childhood and youth are themselves vanity, passing before a man can hold them.
