Amos 5:1-3

Amos takes up a lamentation over a nation not yet dead, the funeral dirge sung before the funeral, the virgin of Israel fallen and none to raise her up. The bench reads virgin as a title of unbroken standing now shattered rather than any comment on conduct, the same title the prophets give Zion and Babylon alike when a people's confidence is stripped away. Amos 5:4-6

All three were shrines with real history, Bethel from Jacob's ladder and Gilgal from Joshua's crossing, and the bench reads the warning as aimed precisely at that inherited legitimacy, since a corrupted shrine with an honest pedigree is more dangerous than one built from nothing. Amos 5:7-9

Amos 5:10-13

Amos 5:21-24

The Lord rejects the entire festival calendar in his own voice, I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies, the sacrificial smoke that was meant to rise as a pleasing odor now refused outright, burnt offerings, meat offerings and peace offerings all named and all turned away. Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs makes the same point of temple music once meant for praise. Verse 24 is the chapter's verified center, let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream, read by the bench as the standard every offering in verses 21 to 23 failed to meet, worship without justice named as noise the Lord will not hear.

Amos 5:25-27

The question of verse 25, have ye offered unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, is answered in the negative the bench reads throughout, since the wilderness generation carried alongside its tabernacle worship the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, idolatry mixed with true worship from the very start.
