2 Thessalonians 3:1-2

The request is for the word before the workers: pray that the word of the Lord may have free course, literally that it may run, the psalmist's runner of Psalm 147:15, and be glorified, even as it is with you, the Thessalonian reception held up as the standard. Deliverance from unreasonable and wicked men is asked in the same breath, Paul writing from Corinth where Acts 18 shows exactly such opposition gathering. For all men have not faith is the dry ground of the request; the word runs, but not every hearer receives it.

2 Thessalonians 3:3-5

But the Lord is faithful: Against all men have not faith stands one pivot, but the Lord is faithful, and his faithfulness does two things, stablish you, and keep you from evil, where the last phrase can be read from the evil one, as in the Lord's own prayer. Paul's confidence about their obedience is placed in the Lord touching you, not in them. The prayer of verse 5 asks direction into two destinations, the love of God, and the patient waiting for Christ, the letter's whole burden compressed into a travel blessing for the heart.

2 Thessalonians 3:6-9

Disorderly is ataktos, a soldier out of rank, and the command in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ is measured withdrawal from every brother who has left the line, not excommunication but distance with intent. The tradition he received of us here is the work rule the team taught by example: they ate no man's bread for nought, but wrought with labour and travail night and day, declining even the support they had power to claim, to make ourselves an ensample. The apostle's tentmaking is the sermon the idle could not answer.

2 Thessalonians 3:10-12

The rule was standing teaching from the first visit: if any would not work, neither should he eat, and the would not carries the whole weight, refusal, not inability; the letters' own charity toward the genuinely needy stands untouched beside it. Verse 11 turns a Greek pun the English cannot keep, working not at all, but busybodies, ergazomenous and periergazomenous, working at nothing yet working around everything. The remedy is quietness, work, and their own bread, dignity restored through the hands.

2 Thessalonians 3:13-15

The diligent get their own word, be not weary in well doing, the same charge as Galatians 6:9, so the idle few do not sour the generous many. The discipline sharpens for the defiant, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed, shame here a medicine aimed at recovery. Verse 15 fixes the spirit that governs the whole procedure, count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother; the goal is a brother back in rank, not an enemy made.

2 Thessalonians 3:16-18

The Lord of peace himself: The Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means answers a letter written into panic and division; peace from the Lord's own hand, in every way and at every time. Then Paul takes the pen: the salutation of Paul with mine own hand, which is the token in every epistle, the authenticating autograph made explicit precisely because a letter as from us (2:2) had shaken them; an amanuensis wrote the body, and the closing hand was the signature the churches could check. Grace closes the letter, as it closes them all.
