2 Corinthians 8:1-5

We do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia: the collection section opens by calling giving charis, grace, the word that will govern both chapters, and the exhibit is Macedonia, where a great trial of affliction and deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality, joy and poverty compounding into generosity by an arithmetic only grace explains. To their power, and beyond their power, willing of themselves, praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift: the poorest churches begged for the privilege of giving. Verse 5 gives the order that makes it possible, first gave their own selves to the Lord: the bench states the standing principle, the gift follows the giver, and no theology of giving that starts with money instead of self has read this paragraph.

2 Corinthians 8:6-8

Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also: Titus had started the collection at Corinth a year before, and Paul sends him back to complete it, grace here plainly meaning the work of giving itself. Verse 7 ranks the grace among the church's other abundances, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, see that ye abound in this grace also, generosity listed with the gifts the Corinthians prized, and the bench notes the gentle irony of asking a church rich in utterance to become rich in giving. I speak not by commandment: verse 8 states the method of the whole section, no levy, but the forwardness of others and the proving of love's sincerity, and the exposition keeps Paul's refusal to command as part of the doctrine, since commanded giving would forfeit the very grace he seeks.

2 Corinthians 8:9

though he was rich: For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich: the section's theology arrives in a single sentence, and the bench across every era has read it as one of the New Testament's great incarnation texts dropped into a fundraising appeal, the eternal riches of the preexistent Son, the poverty of the manger and the cross, the enrichment of believers with what he set aside. He became poor is aorist, one decisive act, and the exchange runs in both directions, his poverty, your riches, the same shape as 5:21's great exchange of sin and righteousness. The exposition notes what Paul is doing: the measure of Christian giving is not the tithe but the self-emptying of Christ, and every collection stands or falls in that light.

2 Corinthians 8:10-12

And herein I give my advice: for this is expedient for you, who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago: counsel, not commandment, aimed at a church whose willingness had outrun its performance for a year. Now therefore perform the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to will, so there may be a performance also out of that which ye have: the bench draws the plain pastoral point, good intentions age badly, and the readiness that never becomes a remittance profits no saint in Jerusalem. Verse 12 sets the measure with a kindness the whole Bible's giving doctrine rests on: if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not, the widow's two mites already having proven the rule.

2 Corinthians 8:13-15

For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened: but by an equality: Paul disclaims a reversal of hardship and states the aim, isotes, equality, your abundance now supplying their want, that their abundance may one day supply yours, the traffic of mercy running both ways across the empire. The citation seals it, as it is written, He that had gathered much had nothing over; and he that had gathered little had no lack, Exodus 16:18, the manna, where every measure of gathering ended in sufficiency by God's own economics. The bench reads the choice of text as the argument: the manna was daily bread that could not be hoarded, and surplus in the Christian economy exists for the empty vessel next to it; the exposition presents the principle as the text's own, without turning it into any modern program the passage does not name.

2 Corinthians 8:16-19

Thanks be to God, which put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you: the chapter turns from principle to personnel, and Paul credits God for the zeal of his colleague, who accepted the exhortation and, being more forward, of his own accord he went unto you. With him travels the brother, whose praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches, unnamed in the text and identified by conjecture ever since, Luke standing as the oldest and most common guess, the bench naming it as a guess. Verse 19 gives the church's own safeguard, chosen of the churches to travel with us with this grace: the fund's courier was elected by the donors, not appointed by the collector, administered by us to the glory of the same Lord, and declaration of your ready mind.

2 Corinthians 8:20-21

Avoiding this, that no man should blame us in this abundance which is administered by us: Paul builds his financial procedure against accusation in advance, plural custody, elected couriers, open books, because the abundance passing through his hands was exactly where his enemies would look. Verse 21 states the rule the church has quoted ever since: providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men, integrity before God insufficient by itself for a public trust, the appearance of honesty owed to the watching world as truly as its substance is owed to heaven. 2 Corinthians 8:22-24

The credentials are stacked in verse 23: Titus, my partner and fellowhelper concerning you; the brethren, the messengers of the churches, apostoloi ekklesion in the Greek, the churches' own sent ones, and the glory of Christ, the highest thing said of any courier in Scripture. Wherefore shew ye to them, and before the churches, the proof of your love, and of our boasting on your behalf: the chapter closes by handing Corinth its moment, the gift itself the proof of love, and the exposition notes that the paragraph's whole machinery of accountability exists so that grace, not suspicion, would have the last word.
