1 Thessalonians 5:1-2

Paul begins the day of the Lord by declining to begin it, of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you, teaching already given at Thessalonica standing sufficient without a new timetable. Yourselves know perfectly grounds the claim in shared instruction rather than speculation. The day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night borrows the Lord's own figure from Matthew 24:43, unexpectedness rather than a calculable date named as the day's one certain feature.

1 Thessalonians 5:3

The false security named, peace and safety, echoes Jeremiah's condemned prophets at Jeremiah 6:14, security proclaimed by men just before judgment falls on them. Sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child draws the birth pang figure Isaiah 13:8 and Jeremiah 6:24 already use for the day of the Lord, and the Lord himself names the same beginning of sorrows at Matthew 24:8. The point of the figure is not only suddenness but certainty and inescapability once labor starts, and they shall not escape closes the verse on exactly that note.

1 Thessalonians 5:4-5

But ye turns the thief figure back on itself, the day that surprises the world need not surprise the church, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Verse 5 grounds the claim in identity rather than merely knowledge, ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day, sonship language naming a settled relation to the coming day rather than achieved alertness. 1 Thessalonians 5:6-7

1 Thessalonians 5:8

1 Thessalonians 5:11

Amen seals the whole epistle's teaching, from the thanksgiving of chapter 1 through the day of the Lord just taught, as a settled matter rather than a proposal. The earliest of Paul's letters to survive ends where every chapter in it has ended, on the Lord Jesus Christ, the same coming named five times over now resting in the single word grace that makes waiting for it bearable.
