Commentary
2 notes on this verseA false witness that speaketh lies,.... Or, "that speaketh lies, even a false witness" (f); and so this is distinguished from a lying tongue, the second of these evils: this is the sin of bearing false witness against one's neighbour, a breach of the eighth command. It may be rendered, "he that bloweth lies" (g); that raises lies, and spreads them abroad, and swears to them, to the damage of others.

yea, seven are an abomination unto him
on Proverbs 6:16-19
Six things, yea seven, is a numerical form used elsewhere in the wisdom literature, naming a full list and then adding one more item to press past a round number into completeness. The list moves from a look, a proud look, to a final act, discord sown among brethren, tracing sin from the eyes down through the tongue, hands, heart, and feet before it settles in the community itself. Discord among brethren closing the list echoes the naughty person of the previous unit, and the commentators read the placement as deliberate, the private deceiver's habit named as the very thing the Lord abhors.
