Gershon's charge is the fabric of the tent: curtains, coverings, entrance curtains, courtyard curtains and ropes. Verse 27 puts every load under Aaron and his sons, “you are to assign to them all that they are responsible to carry”.

The words as well join Gershon to the duty Kohath has just received. John Gill observes that birth as Levi's eldest son left Gershon under the same burden. His families are counted by the same houses and clans.

As well as of the sons of Kohath; for though Gershon was Levi's eldest son, yet his posterity were not excused from the service of the tabernacle, and bearing things of it in journeying: throughout the houses of their fathers, by their families; all in their several houses, and in the several families in those houses, that were of the age next mentioned, were to be numbered.
