Moses and Aaron are told, “Do not allow the Kohathite tribal clans to be cut off from among the Levites”. The risk rests on the men who pack, since verse 20 keeps the bearers from looking at the holy objects.

Kohath was the family of Moses and Aaron, through Amram. John Gill cites the Targum and Jarchi, who read the command as charging the priests not to cause the clans' death through careless packing. Matthew Henry adds that failing to guard another from sin helps to cut him off.
