This site's exposition

The tribe of Issachar will camp next to it

on Numbers 2:5-8

Issachar and Zebulun fill out the east camp, so the three tribes under Judah's standard are all sons of Leah. John Gill gives that shared house as the reason the two take their places under Judah without complaint.

This site's exposition

his division numbers 54,400

Issachar's 54,400 camp beside Judah on the east. John Calvin reads the whole arrangement as God's way of preventing quarrels over precedence among the tribes. Judah's companions were tribes that would accept his rule.
